I hope I am not in the wrong area for this. A buddy has an 86 Regal Limited with the turbo package. It is mostly all origonal with 87K miles. Someone has put a chip in it, it is a Kenny Bell 9006 program chip.

The car seemed to not be idling correctly and they put a code scanner on it and it popped a code saying the computer was bad. They pulled it out and it has evidence of water damage. They have a price from a local parts place (Carquest) for a replacement computer for $80. He called me to find out if he would need another chip for the replacement computer or not. I am an electronics person, and I figure that the chip itself is probable good, but figured that I would check with the experts directly.

Yes, it could be that chip that may be giving some idling problems, but there is a lot more than just that chip in there. Would it be safe enough to put that chip in another computer?

Also, where can we get some info on this particular chip? What kind of improvements does it provide?

Thanks all in advance,
Mike

I would be inclined to replace the chip. There's been allot of improvements in chip tech over the last several years. Plus, some of the older chips had too much timing in them. Get a Turbotweak or extender and it'll completely change the car. I would even do that first just to make sure it's not the chip giving you the problem. Being an electronics tech I'm sure you tried cleaning and re-seating everything. Maybe someone local has an ECM you could borrow to verify. One other thing, if you get a new ECM from the parts store be sure and take your chip AND the calpack chip from the core you turn in. The new ones do not come with one.

I have not seen the ECU yet. I may stop by in a little bit to check it out. They have seen the Kenny Bell chip, where is the calpack located at? It it easily seen as something remove to keep?

Also, where do you reccommend to get a chip from? Directly from Turbotweak or Extender? What do they run also?

Thanks for the help, and sorry to not be that educated yet in these cars. But I will try and gain more...

Mike

The calpack is the little chip next to the big chip. :D You'll see it. I have never used the extender but I absolutely love the Turbotweak chips. As a bonus, they cost less. (about $80) HTH. james

Wow a suncoupe!...sweet

Not many left in this world

Hey thanks. I love it, she is a cruiser and eye catcher. Not the bruiser that most turbo cars are, but I have the locals crying at the shop, LOL...

Thanks for the info about the calpack, I think we have it in sight.

We are going to look at the spring cleaning area and start getting the car running correctly first, and then look at chips and injectors.

I look forward to getting this car running right. The local shop we hang out at is a ford guy that does not know what these cars can do. I told him one evening that these cars can run in the high 11's without opening the motor up and he laughed at me. Just to show his ignorance, I have a mild Stage1 in my Suncoupe, dynoed at 422HP and 511 FtLbs and he asked me what I thought it could do. I told him I had a good 13 second car. He looked at me and said I was just feeling big block torque and that I needed to take the GTEK out. Well, guess what, he was correct, I do not have a 13 second car, I have a 12 second car. What do you expect out of a FORD guy. He has been educated, and there is more to come. I have told the guy with the turbo car all along that he was the only one in the group that was going to out run me. Imagine this, the entire group of about 20 guys, there has never been a Buick in the group. And now the 2 quickest cars will be Buicks. this rocks...

i think i got the same code as what ur gettin. it happened right after i put a poston 93 octane chip in my car. car ran great until about 20 miles from home. car started running like dog crap SES blinkin real fast. turns out i pushed alittle hard on the prom during installation and broke somethin with the computer board. like $75 from my dealership for a new one! car ran great after the new ECM!
