OK guys I have been out of the loop for a long while, and now I'm putting my 87 GN back together after 3 years of hibernation, and it has a whole new setup. I'd like a couple of opinions on a converter, as im ready to drop in the engine and trans in about 2 weeks, and it would help if I'd make up my mind! :p I used to run a 3200 stall art carr NL but this time I want to go to a lockup and I have a slightly bigger turbo... I want something reliable and don't mind spending money for a good converter. I am NOT planning on a lot of strip time, as this is a street car (no cage) and I dont plan on locking it up under WOT. I just want the lockup for drivability.

The combo: Girdled block w/steel caps, stock crank/rods JE pistions, 214/210 billet roller, race ported GN1s with 1.65 scorpions, fully ported stock intake, ATR headers, Tnetics T70 BB P-trim with a .63 exh housing, newgen external gate, PTE front mount, bla bla bla. Still up in the air on injectors and engine management right now.

Anyways, I fully expect this thing to be a low low 11 sec car on sticky street tires and somewhere in the 10.5-10.8 range, maybe quicker, with big boost and rubber. As I said earlier my interest is in *streetability* as I want to drive this car daily in summer. It's still a full option full weight car.

My first question is, who makes a good converter these days? I know art carr went out of biz, and im not sure if he's back in it or if he retired. Ive heard good things about the vigilante converter, too, and also mixed reviews on the 9x11. Any recommendations? Also, how much stall? I was thinking on the 3500-3700 range, as I want quick spoolup but still want something i can run down the road at 40mph with part throttle response.

Also, who sells what you recommend, and how much?? I'm ready to buy soon!

Any and all help is appreciated!! Thanks everyone!

Our 10.5 inch lock up is an excellent choice for your application.itll produce 3200 stall at around 10 psi with your components and it is 10 lbs lighter than comparable lock up units making throttle response excellent as well as spool up time. Many people are using it and our new stator is computer machined in house on a 5 axis cnc machine .the converter is built with all new parts not adapted weldments.the converter is also very timid with low torque output making its streetability excellent as well as being fuel efficient .give us a ring if you need additional info.595.00 and one year warrantee.

The CK piece sounds very interesting.

I am going to that same turbo later on and got my PI rebuilt to a 5 disc 3400 stall. I plan on locking it at the track for the extra MPH and it cost $400 for the rebuild if you can find a single disc for dirt.

Any other input on stall speed? I'd really like to hear from some who have a combo similar to mine... some people say 3000 is fine, others say 3500 isn't enough!!! Am I missing something here?

As far as a brand, it looks like I am either going to go with a vigilante single disk lockup or a PTS 9x11 unit...

Back in the day (3-4 years ago) I ran a 3400-3500 stall (single disc LU Art Carr) with a T66 ptrim and loved it.. No problems and spooled right away.

My dad currently runs a PI 9.5" lu 3500-3600 with a TE64 (66 wheel) P-trim, again no problem runs great.

GinoRin, sent ya an e-mail direct.

Thanks

3500+ is too much stall for a BB70P .63. If you can't get that to spool with a 3000-3200, your tune up sucks......

BB turbo's are far and away easier to spool..... No question.

OOPS..

My bad.. did not notice it was a BB turbo..

I have not had any experience with those... sorry :)

I pretty much agree with Russ, IMO 3400 is tops for a BB, especially in the .63. And if you plan on shifting around 52 or 5400, that stall might not be very efficient at the track.

The real problem is most converters are not dead on concerning stall speed when you specify what you want.

FWIW, I have Vigilante 5 disk "6" pump which is advertised 3600 or so and it spools my 70 P trim with .82 housing ( non bb ) like stock. If you go with a Vigilante, I would get the "0" pump which is @3000-3200. With a bb turbo that thing would spool like crazy.

I have a Vigilante lock up with the "0" pump and it spools great with my PT67. Paul

Chris, what kind of rpm drop do you see on the 2-3 shift, shifting at say 5000 rpm? I know that's a little low but my trans always short-shifts the 2-3 and with a column shift I don't like to manually shift it :-).

i can't answer for your 5000 rpm shift point but my 2-3 comes around 5500 and it usually drops 750-800 rpm on the shifts. Nice efficient converter for sure. I just went 117 unlocked a few weeks ago on a very humid nasty night.
