OK guys I have been out of the loop for a long while, and now I'm putting my 87 GN back together after 3 years of hibernation, and it has a whole new setup. I'd like a couple of opinions on a converter, as im ready to drop in the engine and trans in about 2 weeks, and it would help if I'd make up my mind!
I used to run a 3200 stall art carr NL but this time I want to go to a lockup and I have a slightly bigger turbo... I want something reliable and don't mind spending money for a good converter. I am NOT planning on a lot of strip time, as this is a street car (no cage) and I dont plan on locking it up under WOT. I just want the lockup for drivability.
The combo: Girdled block w/steel caps, stock crank/rods JE pistions, 214/210 billet roller, race ported GN1s with 1.65 scorpions, fully ported stock intake, ATR headers, Tnetics T70 BB P-trim with a .63 exh housing, newgen external gate, PTE front mount, bla bla bla. Still up in the air on injectors and engine management right now.
Anyways, I fully expect this thing to be a low low 11 sec car on sticky street tires and somewhere in the 10.5-10.8 range, maybe quicker, with big boost and rubber. As I said earlier my interest is in *streetability* as I want to drive this car daily in summer. It's still a full option full weight car.
My first question is, who makes a good converter these days? I know art carr went out of biz, and im not sure if he's back in it or if he retired. Ive heard good things about the vigilante converter, too, and also mixed reviews on the 9x11. Any recommendations? Also, how much stall? I was thinking on the 3500-3700 range, as I want quick spoolup but still want something i can run down the road at 40mph with part throttle response.
Also, who sells what you recommend, and how much?? I'm ready to buy soon!
Any and all help is appreciated!! Thanks everyone!
