Coolant-do you use water or distilled?

Nick, is there any harm in running with tap water and antifreeze? I run about a 70Antif/30tap Water mix.
Should I use the water from my dehumidifier?
Is it distilled from a dehumidifier, correct?
What about RMI-25 and tap water/antif? I don't know where to ask for RMI-25 here in Ontario. Napa?
I just think tap water has too much calcium in it which produces the white crap around the rad cores. I need to do my Z too besides the GN.

You really should never run anything more than a 50/50 mix of AF and Water. AF does not have the thermal transfer properties of water. Too much AF will not allow the cooling system to operate nominally. I use straight Distilled Water and either RMI25 or Water Wetter. I run this in all my vehicles during summer and then a 50/50 mix during freezing months. Be sure however that when running a straight water mix, that your cooling system is up to par and properly sealed. Water will not boil out if kept under pressure. Hope this helps. Oh and if you want proof that this system work, I do not own a vehicle with less than 140,000 miles except my one TR. Hope this helps.

You can get distilled water at your local drug store. It's very cheap !!

Anti freeze would be required where the weather may cause freezing and therefore a cracked block. It also raises the boiling point of your coolant as the boiling point of pure anti freeze is 223* if I recall. Using a pressured system will also raise the boiling point too. 3* for every lb. of pressure.

All in all, the water/RMI-25 is the best bet. Remember the downside if you blow a headgasket. Potential bearing damage from the ANTIFREEZE in the oil

If you insist on using antifreeze due to weather conditions, add RMI-25

For over 15 years, I have used tap water and RMI and never seen a problem. The "white stuff" mainly comes from antifreeze dropout which is prevented when using RMI.

Of course, this is all premised on proper cooling system maintaince which is outlined on my web site.

We have GN's that have run RMI for years where the cooling system and radiator looks as good as new, and handles the summer 110+ deg. temps with AC in comfort

Yes, you are correct.

The only coolant system additive that I know about that cleans as well as protects the system is RMI-25. Have known as much as a 20-25 deg. drop in temp from people that have used RMI and our recommended program.

By the way, over the years, this type thread usually is around when getting ready for the warmer season! :biggrin:

Is distilled and deionized water different? Does distilled water have calcium in it or has it got the same stuff as tap water except for the chlorine?

"Deionized" is an informal synonym for "ultra pure" water that is used in industrial and electronics applications.

"Distilled" is a low grade form of deionized, very little of it is made by true distillation anymore. Mostly it's made by passing water thru a series of special resin beds that remove many forms of dissolved minerals.

You may have noticed guys washing cars on car lots, their water passes thru tan-colored plastic tanks on a hand-cart. Those tanks are de-ionizing resin beds. By removing the minerals ("de ionizing") they can air dry the car without risk of water spotting.

I run distilled water and Redline Water Wetter. The inside of my year old radiator is still clean. I drove it numerous times last year in 95* plus weather and the car never exceeded 190* once.

I can't flush the system and get rid of all the tap water without opening the block pipe bolts to drain the water in the block since I want to use distilled with antifreeze. I'd like to know how if you do. If I open the heater hose off the heater core and por water in the rad with prestone first, will it push the water out before completely getting a chance to mix with the tap water that's already in the block?

Where can I get RMI-25 in Canada?

why are you worried about getting every last drop out? pull the lower radiator hose and that will drain just about everything out of the motor and radiator. Put the hose back on and refill, the little bit that is left is going to be so dilluted it won't matter anymore. Its not like getting the oil out after you loose a headgasket, tap water and prestone aren't a contaminant, just an unwanted inferior mixture. Seriously dump and refill with what you want, a few ounzes in 4 gallons isn't going to make a difference.

Order it from Nick ... he'll have it to you pretty quick !! I think you'll get 3 - 4 treatments from a bottle ... instructions are on the bottle ... and Nick's website

I don't know of any place in Canada that has it.

Just did my second treatment yesterday. Just open the petcock and run the engine while inserting a garden hose. Keep doing this till the old antifreeze is all out. I kept opening and closing the petcock so the water in the block mixes with the water in the radiator. When clean,drain the radiator,close the petcock and pyt in 8oz of rmi125 and distilled water. My first treatment lowered my temp 20 degrees. Tommy
