I'm in need of a source for lacquer paint. None of the shops in my area deal with lacquer. Also, which numbers on the body tag are the paint code. My GN is an '86, and has metalic lacquer. Thanks, Brian

Most good paint stores can order it. It's the WA number on the trunk's RPO sticker.

not sure the 86 had a wa # if im not mistaken the 86 has the code in the rpo sticker in the trunk look for a 19u and that is the color code. not so sure about the metalic thing though? from my past experieance with the gn's it should be a straight black non metalic. my car look's metalic also but im sure it is overspray from being out in the parking lot at work.

19U should be on the cowl tag under the windshield wiper drivers side.

19L is the secondary color, both lamp black according to the RPO code book.

It's also on the trunk RPO code sticker.

I have a L9U or 19U (hard to tell with my eyes) just before it says lacquer on the cowl tag. I also have a W11 on the bottom left of the tag. This W11 also appears on the trunk sticker next to WE2. Brian

What is a secondary color?

sounds like a sharp color, im looking in the book now and it states 19 as black and 17 is the metalic but further down it also states 41 being black as well. Maybe the 41 is black and the 19 is VERY black..lol

got me
good luck

The secondary color was the other paint code if your car was two tone, which was available back then. Lower and upper colors. L and U.

Both are black, called Lamp black in my code book, on my '87 GN and my '87 WE4 cowl tags.

W11 is the T type package code and is present on only my GN's cowl tag not on the WE4 one.

My tag reads 19U, but my GN is difinetly metalic black. It has a bronze colored metalic in the paint, and I have owned it since new. Brian

Crappy paint from the factory. Standard equipment on all cars. The correct paint is solid black. No flakes, rail dust, dirt, hair or rat poop. The long paint code is WA848. If you doubt it just try argueing with the guy who has to mix it down at the paint store.

If it was me I'd use something more up to date than laquer. There is no merit in spending a lot of money on out dated materials. Hey if you have to repaint it than it aint original anymore.

I'm not trying to repaint the car. My original paint is in very good condition. I had a slight mishap on the way to Napierville Quebec CA with Jack cotton last weekend. First time in 22 years that I have had any damage to the body, and it happened in an enclosed hauler no less. Anyway, I need to refinish the drivers fender so I'm looking for the correct paint. It is diffinitely metalic, not dirt or dust. The sparkles are goldish/bronze. My '86 GN was built on 08-05-85 and came from the factory with this metalic black. It sucks to be trying to repair a 22 year old vehicle, and find paint that does'nt match the code on the cowl tag. My car has 15,000 miles on it and has never seen rain, so I would like to put the fender back to original condition. I am also looking for a NOS drivers fender if anyone can help me out. Thank you, Brian

Thank you. It makes more sense to me now.:)

Brian, take the damaged fender to the paint store & tell them to match it. Tell them to start with the 19L code or WA848 then add what they need to get an exact match. Someone that knows what they are doing will be able to match it. I do believe it was a contamination problem at the factory. Good luck!

I'm telling you that is crappy paint from the factory. I also had it on my 86 GN that I bought with 6K miles in 87. Every black car built in Pontiac MI rolled out of the paint booth with it. I bet the bottom of the trunk lid and the door jambs aint got the sparkles. I'm guessing the other colors also had the problem but since they aint as dark as black,or were metallic to begin with, nobody ever noticed.

Okay. How many original owners out there can back me up? I know every time you washed a waxed your car you noticed it.

If it really was metalic from the factory dont you think there would be more metal particules in it. Take a look at any metallic paint and see how much better it is. Its just plain crappy paint from the factory.

I'll send you bag of brass filings from my key cutting machine. A pinch in a quart of WA848 black would be a perfect match.
