Crank question

Can someone tell me what the little angled grooves / slashes are for on the crank where the rear main seal rides? Is this to help keep the seal lubed or something?Just curiouse as I'm in the process of replaceing factory rope seal with a neoprene one.Thanks in advance

They push the oil away from the seal . Without them your motor would leak oil from the rear main seal.
