Do I use a stock crank,or spend the big money and get a good aftermarket crank? I`m planning on running low 10s,GN1 heads, turbo and cam TBD later. The guys at Webber Racing say a stock crank will hold up for my et range,I just want a second oppinion. The block will have all four steel mains in it. I wasnt planning on using a Stage block but a deal that I couldnt pass on came my way. So since I have it, I dont want to do anything stupid on the buildup. The package deal I got also came with a virgin set of alum Stage 2 heads, but seeing what a PITA it takes to make these things work and only wanting to go low 10s I guess I`ll try selling them to offset the costs of the GN1s. Any info is apprecieted.

I would use a steel crank of some sort and a good set of rods. With a block like that, why take the chance? I also assume you had the block sonic checked. Some Stage 1s have been known to have REALLY thin cylinder walls.

Keith,

Since you're going to build a Stage one motor it really doesn't make sense to skimp on what's inside. I adamantly disagree with Webber racing telling you that a stock crank is good into the low 10 second range.

A stock crank on it's best day is good for 650 H.P. and it will take more than that to get the performance you want in a full weight car. It will cost you more for the crank in the short run but the peace of mind is worth it.

Good Luck

I have to agree with Neal ,its not worth the risk:D I go low tens on my stock crank and block but that because its not worth putting a strong crank in a weak block to me at least...

Spend the few extra dollars on the Steel Crank you will sleep better and the engine will live longer.

Thanks guys, that was what I was thinking all along. Now the car just sits a little longer to get $$$ for a crank:( . BTW what the best source for a steel crank. My buddy got one from Moldex for his big block Buick[9.80s, 3600#car]

Keith

Billet cranks are easy to get, sorta. Of course you need to spendabout$2500and wait for moldex, scat, LA billet etc. to make it to your specs. or...... if your like me, just keep i eye out for a GOOD used crank(hint hint, Geno) at a reasonable price. Im in the market for 3.400 stoke or little bigger for a S2 3.8. A used crank that is 10/10 or standard with no damage would be ideal.(typical price $1000) of course those cranks are HARD to find. Buick no longer produces a raw forging.(those were $500 plus machine cost $$$$)

Get a steel crank! and do it right the first time.If you have a stage block and run low low 10's what is the sence put on the biggest turbo you can afford and hang on!

They are right get a real crank. For a slightly less than 2k usd you can get a crank that looks like this, any stroke, all the same price.
