I dropped off two forgings at Moldex yesterday to have them finish machined. In going through the specs with the shop foreman (Whitey), He stated that very few people are crossdrilling cranks for high RPM usage anymore.

He was very knowledgeable about the Buick V6 engine and knew the specs and dimensions by memory.

How many folks out here have had a crank done recently?
Did you have it cross drilled?
If not, have you experienced any rod bearing failures?

I know what the Buick MotorSports book says but........

I need expert advice here. Bill Anderson.....any opinions?

thanks
Dave

We were doing them for a while but saw no real benefit to it because our bearings still looked good on the high horsepower engines without being cross drilled. At high RPMs, you can actually loose a little bit of your oil wedge as oil can be forced into the hole where ther is no load and exit, reducing the volume on the loaded side.It will weaken the journal as well, personally I would recommend against it.

How much is Moldex charging you? I have a forging that I need done also. TIA

Moldex quoted me $1000 each for machine work. If you supply bobweight info they will also balance the crank.
