I'm wondering if cryo treating a crank for the LC2 would make enough difference in strength to offset the cost...any opinions? What about heat treating? Kinda wish I took a metalurgy(sp) class in college now:(

Joe, cryo treating the crank would be okay to do, but heat treating *might* warp the crank some which would then need straightening...Not a good idea, IMO...

BTW, from what I've heard, the more stuff you have cryo'd at the same time(like rods, etc), the cheaper it works out to be per part...Kind of like the way it is for powdercoating...

Sometimes machine shops will even keep a running list of people wanting to have parts treated so they can get volume pricing.

turbov6joe,
I had my crank nitrited. My engine guy told me they saw improved durability on their dirt track "claimer" motors that run cast cranks. Even though it is only a surface treatment he said the cranks would last a whole season....as opposed to a few races. I figured I could use any improvment possible.

Nitrited huh, what all is involved in that process?
Hey Jim, your a machinist, where can I get my crank cryo treated around KC? I wonder what they would charge to do 2 cranks together??? Anything to increase the longevity is what I'm talking about. Do you have plans to go to BG this year?

I don't know how the process works but it's really a surface hardning treatment. Lunati does it on some of there cranks and they state that it gives a case depth of about .015-.022.

Their quote.........
Each shaft is heat treated by plasma gas nitrite, creating a case depth of .015"-.022". This heat treating creates high compressive loads, which in turn gives higher cycle bending fatigue.

Joe, not sure on the cryo stuff here in KC...I don't really know anyone around here offhand that has done it, but I haven't asked anyone either...I will ask around at work to a couple of people I know that might know...

As for BG...I don't have much vacation time this year as I was laid off almost all of last year...So it's probably not in the cards this year either...I may try going down Friday after work and coming home Sunday, but as usual, I will have to wait and see...

Especially now since my car is down, again  :( I'm trying to figure out what else I need to just do the conversion to the 86/7 setup...I shouldn't need a whole lot more to finish it...But I need to pull the motor and find out exactly what the problem is now...I think it's related to what the problem was before...My band-aid solution obviously didn't work...

Talk to ya later...
