My dash board lights went out today.
I have a digital dash and the speedo, mileage, and gas guage went out today.
Can this be a fuse or something more serious?
What should I check?

Thanks

First thing I would check would be the dash itself to the connectors behind it.

I have the same problem. There is aparently a fuse in the panel below the steering wheel called 'lights' or 'dash lights' or something similar. Check that first.

In the fuse box I was able to locate a fuse that is not working. It does state the instrument panel. I tried several fuses with no luck. None of them go on. It appears that everything is connected.
Is this the fuse that is responsible for the speedo, gas and odometer?
Where else should I check?

After checking your fuses, remove the cluster and look for a possible loose wire or short. Sounds like your cluster is not the original factory.

So you have the stock digi dash, and the MPH doesnt work, nor does the gas gauge?
if the ODOMETER doesnt work, then its the speedometer cable, but i assume you might not have posted correctly-

if the MPH goes out, its a glitch in the cluster-
if the gas gauge pegs one way or the other, its more than likely the sender wire.

did all these problems happen all at once? Hard to understand that the odometer would go out at the same time everything else did.

Fuse not working?

When you say the fuse was not working, do you mean that it was blown or that there is no power to the fuse? When you replaced the fuse with another fuse did the fuse blow or did you check to see if there was power on both sides of the fuse with a test light? Did you check to see that the dimmer was not turned down all the way? I think if you turn it all the way down the readout will go blank. It is time to do some basic trouble shooting of the electrical system. The inst panel fuse is where you should start.

Krom you are always looking for the easy way out.

It is true that John Spina is an electronics guru when it comes to the turbo regals, and I am sure he could give you some pointers.

Happy testing!

Dash Lights

I had the same problem happen to mine. I found that the plastic grid in the back of the dash was worn. Since they are not sold anymore new I got a good used one from Gbody parts in Maryland. (Brian Weavy). Call 410-285-3740. That may be the problem, easy to cahnge out. Just make sure you bend the tabs back on the plastic grid for the fuel gauge. Let me know if that was it.

Buzzard,

I did replace the fuse and there was no power. I checked both sides and there was no power. The fuses are not blowing. Where does the fuse panel get power for the inst panel fuse?

Quick6'N' K C,

Yes everything went out at the same time.
I drove my car last Wednesday (the day before Thanksgiving) and everything was fine. I started it up yesterday and the lights were out.

I played with the dimmer, it didn't make a difference.
I do have the original cluster.

I believe that something is up with the inst panel fuse area.

Wornoutshoes,

Can you give me more info.? I was only able to locate fuses in the fuse box cluster. Is there somewhere else that there are fuses? Am I looking in the right place?

Thanks for the replies.

Does the lamp in the shifter lite when you turn the lites on?

Does the LPS 5amp fuse get power when you turn the lamps on?

Stereo work?

What else doent work?

Razor,

Interesting, the shifter light does not work. I didn't notice that.

The LPS 5 amp fuse is not getting any power. When I pull out the fuse, and touch the connections with my test light, no power.

The stereo works.

Everything else appears to be working.

I spoke to John at Caspers and he recommended removing the Speedo cluster and checking the connection for power. If power, the cluster is bad, if no power, problem is somewhere else.

Still need help.

Question is..does it lite your test lite after you turn the lites on? Not with the lamps off.

Radio dim when you swicth the lamps on? Only applicable with certain stereo's.

If the lamps work..you may have a bad plug behind the instrument cluster.
Or a bad cluster.

No power to fuse

Now we are getting somewhere, if you have no power to either side of the fuse in the fuse block your problem is there. You need to determine why the fuse block isn't getting power. On my car the bulkhead connector had corrosion on the terminals and that wasn't allowing a good connection. Another common problem is the fusable links at the starter. You need to make sure that they are ok and sometimes you have to pull on them to ck if they are burned up inside the plastic covering. The bulkhead connector is located at the rear of the fuse block and goes though the firewall to the area below the wiper motor. You can remove the wiper motor for better access and remove the center bolt, then pull the connector apart. Ck for corrosion or burned up terminals, repair and recheck for power to the fuse. The fuse should be hot when the headlights are on as it is the same fuse for the tail lights. Do your tail lights work? Have you tried a headlamp switch?

Check the 20 ampere taillamps fuse and the 20 amp. gages fuse.

Tail lamps fuse powers the 5 amp. INST LPS fuse. ;)

I have alot to check.
Thanks for the info.
I should have some time tomorrow night.
I'll let you know what happens.
I believe that the fuse block is not getting any power and I need to figure out why.

The INST LPS fuse location does not have any power.
The tail lights are working.
It appears that everything is working and I just need to find out why this fuse location is not getting any power.
How do I take the fuse panel off to see behind it?

Dont mean to sound like a broken record... DOES IT HAVE POWER "WHEN" THE LIGHT SWITCH IS ON?????

Off course it has no power when the lights are off.

Razor,

You are right, sorry about that. Just checked and the left side does have power when I turn on the head lights.

Now what?
