OK, even more confused now. In order to get the black bumpers what option code is it? Is it different than the WO2? What code is the aluminum wheels that are on this car? Where is the paint code? I see the ad says Maroon but the car is clearly black, repaint??

I am learning real fast it is easier to decipher the old muscle cars versus these.

In case everyone hasn't figured it out yet I am new to these cars and I am trying to learn what codes give you what etc. I want a GN but would also like a blacked out WE4 (WO2 option also??) The guy I bought my Z/28 from has a all black T he says is a WE4 and I am trying to work something out and try and buy it too. I want to learn as much as I can so please excuse the basic redundant questions.

Basically the WE4 is just a black turbo Regal with painted bumpers.
The RPO code for the black bumpers is VH6.
The alloy turbo wheel is RPO N89.
The paint code on that Limited is 79U. It is also on the bottom of the tag as U.WA 8529.
If you look real close at the pic with the trunk lid open you can see the dark red paint on the gutter area. Crappy pics.
IMO thats kind of a waste as far as option content for a Limited goes. Thats a stripped down Limited in other words. A well optioned Limited would have the leather seats and shorty console. Heck if I was able to order a Limited and I just had to have the black out W02 trim I would have ordered buckets and floor shift if I didn't want the leather seats.

It has a digital dash, PW, PL, moonroof. That's pretty well loaded except the leather. I don't think that the lack of leather demotes it to being not well optioned.

My idea of well optioned is a list of the most expensive options. Heck why the DD and astroroof and no leather? Blame my obsession with Rivieras on that. I have owned some that were"money no object" optioned out and some(well one anyway) that somebody must have ran out of ink the day the order was written. Plus my 86 GN is fully loaded. Every option but a T-top or Astroroof. The previous owner had a bad experience with a 84 Hurst/Olds and leaking T-tops. 92 codes on the SPID label.

Thats still a good car. If anything with those options and that color there aren't to many like it.

Im new to these cars as well. I have read alot of statements, but would like to find the root of the information. Are there any websites or documents that would have information as to how rare the all black WE4 and black w/chrome bumper WE4 cars are? Or backround on the WE4 cars in general? Is there any concrete data or proof that proves or disproves the statements in the Hemmings article?

Pick up all of the Steven Dove Facts&Figures books. There are 3 of them IIRC. Postons used to carry them. There should be plenty of WE4 info in all of them. Copies of dealer order forms, memos from Buick. All types of little trivia that you wont read about in Kirbans books. There were only 1547 WE4's made. Again, no such thing as a chrome bumper WE4. There is no breakdown of how many black with chrome bumper cars or any other color for that matter. About all you can do is guesstimate the color breakdown. Take the 5500 or so turbo Regals and divide by the number of colors available would be a rough guess. I have a large number of SPID labels on file. I can safely say that every WE4 has the W02 code. And every WE4 has the VH6 black bumper code.No such thing as a chrome WE4.No new or old WE4. Kirban is just flat out wrong on the info HMM qouted.

Here's a pic of the WE4 sales brouchure. These pop up on eBay from time to time. You might contact Pete Hoffman at Kirbans as I think thats whose pic I stole here.

Thanks for the info. Thats exactly what I was looking for. I will check out the books and see what i can find.

After looking a bit, I got a original sales brochure for a Turbo T. Here are a couple things it states:
"Regal Turbo Power is taken beyond the Grand National legend...take a closer look at the Turbo T package (WE4)"

"FEATURE: Lower total body weight
Benefit: The turbo T package (WE4) will enable you to merchandise a car similar in appearance, and yet lighter in weight, than the Grand National. This reduction in weight theoretically, makes the Turbo T faster than the grand national; and for a lower price. "

"Feature: Appearance package
Ordering the regal with the Turbo T package (WE4) gets you the "dressed Balck" look of the grand national with subtle "T" emblemson the front fenders. "

"What brought about the Turbo T concept
The WE4 package was originally concieved because certain content items, such as chrome steel wheels and specific interior components, place the Grand National in a weight class which is capacity constrained. Grand national sales volume cannot exceed 33% of regal Turbo engine production. The other 66% of Turbo sales must be in other Regals. "

You know I've crunched the numbers many of times and that never adds up. I think somebody just said screw it after the first couple of months of production. Or maybe the turbo Regal was a flop and Buick anticipated making twice as many of them compared to the GN?

don't know but here is my WE4 id codes if it helps at all

Anyone want to trade their WE4 for the Mustang I have posted in the cars-for-sale section???

Wow, it looks pretty clean under the car and under the hood for that kind of mileage. $4 is probably fair though.

I doubt the reserve is close to 4k. bid is over 4k with over 2 days left, i would guess it will at least hit 5-6k and that might not even meet the reserve.

With 166K miles? Eh, the seller wouldn't get that much out of me.

The seller is a member here and had it listed quite awhile ago. I believe he was asking 7500 for it.
Too bad it doesnt have grey leather interior that was messed up, i have a spare interior and could swap in to that car if it was grey.

I really like those black with chrome limiteds, but its priced a little high.

A WE4 is simply a black Regal with the WO2 Exterior Sport Package *and* black bumpers. Everything else is just bla, bla, bla. Got it?

strike

Actually they also all have grey buckets and console.

eBay Motors: Buick : Grand National (item 320190733162 end time Dec-09-07 20:00:00 PST)

Here's an auction for a very unusuall TR. How many black Limiteds with the tan leather interior have you seen? To bad it needs new seat covers and some paint work. And to bad it didn't have the W02 package too.

I love black and chrome. Tan is cool too. I wish it was closer to me. I'd change it to the grey leather I have for my WE4.

Also found this on Wikipedia encyclopedia today:
"1987 also offered a lightweight WE4 (Turbo T) option which is extremely rare today. Only 1,547 of this variant were produced. They were painted black and treated to the same blackout package as the Grand National, including bumpers, grille, headlight and taillight trim. The differences between a WE4 and the base Grand National were the interior trim package, wheels, exterior badging, aluminum bumper supports, and aluminum rear brake drums as opposed to the Grand National's cast iron."

Wow, I didn't know they had aluminum brake drums...

Not all! Cast irons on WE4 with the G80 posi option. Only the peg leg alloy wheeled cars recieved the aluminum drums. You wont ever see aluminum drums on a 86-87 GN. With or without posi. The code for aluminum drums is J42. Code for posi is G80 and alloy wheel is N89 if you want to double check your SPID label.

Who the heck wrote that for Wiki? Dennis Kirban? LOL.
