I have a Stage II from EA and a Street Edge 2800-3000 stall converter on the way and want to get the right ATF for them. Lonnie recommends dexron VI. There's a few threads on this already, but nobody specifies brand. Are all dexron VI brands the same? How many quarts will a bone dry trans and converter take?

I just started using Valvoline VV370 DEXRON-VI Full-Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. I read somewhere on the forum 10-12 qts if you are bone dry. If you are running an external , deep pan, and/ or extra hose routing, it could be a little more

As long as you buy a Name brand, Castrol, Valvoline etc.... you should be fine. Don't buy a cheap discount Store brand.................

We have used various brands of Dex VI since it was first introduced, and not having done any research on various brands, could you please let me know what differences you have found with different brands, or know why some are better?

Thanks, as I am always looking providing the best for my customers in quality and price. :)

Thanks everyone. I'll just buy a case of 12 to have a little extra. I just didn't want to spend this much on trans and converter just to skimp on the ATF and screw it all up.

there was a press release by GM a couple years ago
basically stated
Dexron VI is a registered name by GM , any manufacturer displaying Dexron VI on label means it has to meet the GM standard for Dexron VI fluid and GM watches it ..., shouldn't matter what brand you buy as the companies that sell it have to be licensed by GM

Dexron III on the other hand is no longer licensed by GM ( not since 2006 ) so having dexIII or dexIII compatable on label does not ensure that you are getting a fluid up to GM spec

heres a link to GM list of licenced DEX VI companies

you can also look it up on WIKI

Thanks Paul, that is great info!

After reading the WIKI data on Dex VI, it would be the opposite of smart for anyone with a fresh trans build NOT to use DEX VI to protect and extend the life of their expensive trans. :)

We have been using it since it was first available, and see it lasting 3-4 times longer than regular fluid in our track applications.

pacecarta is right on,and some well know manufactures also supply the fluid for the lesser name brands its just marked up a bit;)

Ordered 9 qts of Castrol dexron VI from the local parts store. Not cheap but I want the most protection since I don't have an external cooler.

I haven't use any Off brand/discount store Trans fluid, I just stay away from them after noticing differences in their Engine oil formulations, viscosity etc..., I'm sure some of them try to make an extra $ now & then. :(

I can get the Amalie Dex 6 locally for about $60 a case. Been running it since my last freshening and no problems at all.

You will need more if the converter is dry

I got the capacity info from a post in this thread. I just used the capacity for a 2004r and a 10" converter even though my converter is 9.5". Funny though because the trans guy said the same thing, so I probably should get another quart or two. Anyway, he said everything should be installed by tomorrow.

I dumped 12 quarts into mine and still needed an extra quart after running it for a while. Also have two coolers (Fluidyne) and an external filter tho... It was at/near the low mark on the stick so the extra quart took it to the first bend. Thats how I remember filling them way back when so I hope that still applies.
