The switch that tells the ECM when power assist is needed.

I just went over the 84 ecm wiring schematic the other night to compare my ecm to an 86/87 for conversion purposes. I did not see anything about a power steering switch connected to the ecm and I went over every wire too.

The Regals did not use one. The 85 hotair Riviera did. All it did was kick the idle up a knotch when the wheel was cranked full turn to keep the steering from feeling jerky. I think?

Since Direct scan was made specifically for the 86 87 turbobuicks, I wonder why it (p/s) was included in the program then?

Sorry to be beating something so minor to death. When I get on one of my "whats this for?" kicks....

Now I know why that is on your program. The PS switch is also used on the 1986 Park Ave/Century with the 3.8 NA. It also uses the 86-87 ECM #1227148.

WTF i thought he WAS joking.... kinda like blinker fluid - so get your thong out your ass cuz your post was worthless as well.

I love how this guy doesnt help, he just posts this. WTF

I honestly don't know what was meant by that. I thought that was RoyalTLT referring to the previous post by 84gngary. From what I gather from this thread I've started and the one I started about this in the Scan-tool tech section,... is that its something that I don't need to worry about since it doesn't seem to be affecting performance. I have also looked on my 87 GN for some type of pressure switch in the power steering system, and have found nothing. I'm still confused about why that is in the direct scan program when the program says it was specifically built for 86/87 turbobuicks, but I'm hoping I'll luckily come across something on this when I do searches or read over recent post. Not a big deal. As for the blinker fluid thing. I obviously have a very dry sense of humor. hope I don't put anybody off. And seriously, I'd like to thank everybody in the hot air section who has replied to any of my threads. I hope to meet some of you someday and personally thank you. Its a long story, but if it where not for knowing I'd have the hot-air section of turbobuick.com to help me when I'm in a pinch, I probably would have taken up an offer from a guy right after I had bought the car, and he had plans to throw away that "worthless turbo six engine" (his exact words) and drop a 350 in it. I've taken a beating from some members on this website through private messages and emails and a couple other websites (and in person too), for "bothering" with a hot air. But I've become very attached to this car since I've bought it this past jan.

first let me say - i thought you were joking b/c to my knowledge powersteering is/was purey a mechanical function - like said there is NO noticible senor or switch or electronics coming from MY 87' P/S pump [or any other vehicle that I own] it is a Belt driven pump that turns with the engine. 2nd off dont worry about taking a beating about your hot air - my brother has been through that BS for years and still goes through it  [i've played around and talked about him too...LOL] first people said he wouldnt go faster then 14, than 13, now he's in the 12's at 105 on pump gas, no i/c, 1.9x 60ft so dont believe all the BS. Hot airs can be made fast too.... [now stock one's on the other hand...hahaha ;) ] if you have any ?s about hot airs - PM my brother - Sixth Sense? [you know we're in St. Louis] We are in the local club and stay at Gateway.... in fact we'll be there tonight. HTH

No sensor on our cars. It's used on some cars to kick up the idle to keep the rpms from dipping too low. On my mother's bonneville you can barely turn the wheel at idle and the rpms will kick up just a little, just like how when the AC kicks on the IAC opens a little more.

I can't let it rest. LOL. my parents didn't spank me enough when I was a kid,... what can I say...:)

No really though. I was on advance auto parts website to see if they had the pressure side power steering hose for my 84. I came across the power steering pressure switch for the 87 gn.

http://www.partsamerica.com/Product...et=A&searchfor=Power+Steering+Pressure+Switch

(they don't carry one for the 84, and being how I've got mine completely apart, obviously isn't one). So, what the heck is going on here? Is this a mess-up on advance auto parts website?

I'm not trying to make something out of nothing here, (or who knows? maybe I am:p ) Just curious is all. The p/s on my direct scan is still illuminated.

Ok I'll put this to bed. I should have done some research before bringing up this post last night. Thats got to be a mess-up on thier website. My 87 Buick service manual tells me that the 87 turbobuick ECM's are set up for a power steering switch input, Because, their the same ECM's as some of the other gm cars from that year, and most of the front wheel drive cars with rack and pinion did have a power steering switch. (for instance the 3.0 port injected motors.) That would be pin-out D 11. There just simply is no input going to it. I guess my version of Direct Scan hadn't caught that when it was made.

Oh what the hell, there isn't much traffic in the hot air section anyway....

I'm off to D.C., Happy Thanksgiving everybody!!

The computer is sort of generic. The PROM is what specifically programs it to particular cars. That's why the computer out of a NA FWD 3.8L of the right years works fine in the turbo cars. Look at a list of trouble codes the computer is capable of kicking out and you'll see a lot of inputs aren't used like the alky injection trouble code.

yes Hot airs can be fast also, I went 12.08 @112 in 1993 in my 85. And that was before all of the new Turbos,Injectors, and a million chips and stuff were made.Anyone that has a hot air car don't get discourged they can be fast also.It just takes a little more money!!!

HTH

Well, you will now have to list that combo for that run.
Inquiring minds "need" to know. :D ;)
