alright guys i need some help. heres my setup:
walboro 340 hotwired and adujustable fuel pressure regulator
42lb 009 injectors
TT chip set up for the 009s and alky
razors alky kit

now i just put the injectors, chip, and alky in. Now the car is running like crap. I set the fuel pressure to 42lbs with the vaccum line off, and set the alky control knob to 4. Made my first pass and slowly rolled on the throttle, and finnaly at WOT i hit 15lbs of boost and the whole time i only had 1.5 knock retard. So then i turned the dial up to 5 on the alky and slowly rolled the throttle and at WOT hit 15lbs of boost and had 0 knock retard. When i made those passes the O2s where at about 815ish.
Then i go to make another pass and this time push into the throttle a bit hard and the car backfired, had an instant 5.5 on the knock retard and i let off the gas and the knock went right away. I put the car away for the night and now i just messed with it tonight.

Well i was thinking that my chip is set up for 20-22 lbs of boost and does have high timing for the street. its 24 degrees in 1st and 2nd gear, then 23 in 3rd and overdrive. So i started to turn up the boost on the waste gate arm and brought the eye end in 5 hole turns untill i noticed the boost guage actually moving up any, and i got it up to 17ish lbs of boost tonight. But the same thing happened, and i had to turn the alky up to 8 so that i didnt have any knock retard. It even seemed to be inconsistant and sometimes when i rolled on the throttle it still popped and backfired. My alky is starting to spray at 4lbs of bost and is constantly spraying untill i let out of it. Im pretty stumped right now.

I completly tuned the car up BEFORE i did a single performance piece to it. Plugs gapped at .35, msd wires, cleaned the maf VERY VERY carefully, cleaned the intercooler, cleaned the throttle body, Tps is set at idle and WOT. So i did do my homework somewhat, and of corse i have a bost guage and a scanmaster. So if anybody can lend some advice i would GREATLY appriciate it. Also a few small easy questions i have is what do people do for a boost controller? adjusting the waste gate arm is a PITA. And if anybody from NC or MD read this i live in new bern NC or home is Snow Hill MD if there are any somewhat locals around that could help me out, i dont mind driving at all. Thanks for any help guys,
Kenny

Plugs 42's or 43's?

Gappem' at .032 if you plan on getting up past 20 psi. 24/23 seems a little high to me....anyone else?

Mine with 60# injectors/alky was set to 18/20 @ 16-18psi from Eric. I'm still playing with timing, so I could be wrong. But that does seem high.

What fuel are you using?

I wouldnt do anymore WOT pulls until you find out what the popping is.

Why not tune the car with the Alky off with pump gas/low boost, and then then turn the boost up/spray the Alky?

Where did you get your fuel pump? There are some junk 340s out there.
I'd start there if you have a "169" pump.

alright, plugs ill have to check what number they are, but the are the direct stock replacements. Im using 93 octane, and i just bought the fuel pump from gbodyparts three weeks.

What is the best way to test a coil and test the maf? Ill be starting with that, and then i need to put a boost controler of some sorts in the car, i was doing some reading and with me turning the eye end on the wastegate rod its supposedly not a good way to turn the boost up. What are the recomended boost controllers to use, i dont need a fancy electronic one, just one that works.

Scan tool?

Car at idle, tap the maf with the handle of a screwdriver. If the motor stumbles, it's on it's way out. OR using a scan tool, WOT blast see what the MAF is maxing out at.

I think it's 255 grams for stock and then it goes up form there depending on if you use a translator/Bob Bailey chip.

RJC has a simple easy to use controller - BoostC

Coil test here - Quick Reference Page For the '86/'87 Turbo Regals and '89 Turbo T/A Look at the last able just above the wastegate "y". 11-13 ohms across the towers, tested with a multi-meter.

alright guys heres the scoop so far
i let the car warm up, and then tried tapping the maf and it did not seem to stumble or cough or anything

im running ac delco 44s gapped at .35

and the wires are 100 percent on the right way. BUT....

i went to ohm out the coil. The number 4 and 1 tower i could NOT get any numbers out of ohming it. I clicked through every dial on the ohm section and i got nothing. Now i checked the other two sets and i got 12.53ish on both of them. So im guessing ive got a bummed coil. so whats going to be the best bet for a new coil. Can i get one from autozone? and i know that autozone can get accel coils for these. And yes i read that its not a power gainer by getting the accel but if i can get the coil locally and it works, ill buy it. So what should my plan of attack be on this. thanks for the ideas and help guys.

Your plugs are a little hot. Maybe try a cooler 42 or 43 plug and tighten up the gap to 33-34

so i bought a autozone special today, ohmed it out and it read 8.5 on all three sets of terminals. I said what the hell and stuck it in, took it for a spin and it did not pop or stumble or anything. Ive got to mess with the fuel again tomorrow. And maybe ill try some of the 42 or 43s with a slightly tighter gap. So should i get the 42s or 43s? and while the plugs are out ill do a compression test aswell.

Get the AC CR43TS and gap them at .032".

Good for at least 27psi. on a stock motor with pump and alky.

alright so heres the scoop now. i pulled the plugs out, while they were all out i compression checked each cylinder, and they were at 145-150 on all of them. then i gapped a set of 43s at .32 hooked everything back up. Then i let the car warm up and then took it for a cruise. Im still have a bunch of knock retard. i had the alky dial set at 4, and slowly rolled on the throttle when i got to about 10 lbs of boost i had 2.1 on the knock retard, then it went to 4.0 and jumped to 9.1. i then let out of it and turned the car around to make another pass with more alky. turned the knob up to 6 and the numbers were about the same. So what should i be looking for the solve this knock problem. I figure i should get it sorted out before i crank the boost up, but now with the colder plugs and tighter gap wouldnt that hinder me. And then i have no idea what i can do to get rid of the knock retard, the tps is good, fuel system is good, coil and wires and plugs are good. So im at a stopping point untill i come up with some more ideas. thanks for any help guys

It almost sounds like the alky is not spraying. I would go over your install again. Maybe test the system by supplying some compressed air to the MAP sensor (to simulate boost).

Eric

how does this simulation work with compressed air? and when somebody holds the test button on the alky i can feel the pump kick on, and then shut off when the button is depressed. But thats not saying that the tip maybe clogged? it was all clean when i installed it but maybe there was something in the lines or something. The level in the alky has definatly dropped though.

I don't believe the pump should turn back off if you're pressing the button. Maybe you're right about something being clogged. Sounds like a good place to start.

When you push the alky button the car should bog a little. If it does not, then there are issues with the alky system.

Are you sure that the downpipe isn't hitting anything?
