I just drove my car for the first time today after a new engine transplant..... I purchased a shell from someone and put my engine into the car. I drove it around for a while today and I have nothing except the actual courtesy light that comes on.... The readings-fuel level, speed, boost, whatever else is there... dont work. If I hit bumps or click the parking lights off and on I get some life..(the readouts all flicker) Is this a bad ground??? I checked my fuses ( they seem to be in tact, but it was kind of dark out when I started my hunt with a flashlight. Please feed me some ideas if you could...

Thanks,

Matt

Make sure all the wiring is good because it does sound like a loose connection. When they go bad it's usually because of the power supply (I guess there's something in there sort of like a transformer in a PC). I'm not sure if they flicker before they die - it's possible. Mine just died without any flickering or other fanfare. Casper's fixed it for me (and did the triple digit mod at the same time).

Caspers

What product at Caspers will help me fix the problem if it is similar to yours?

thanks,

matt

The instrument cluster may not be set into the plug all the way. Push the cluster towards the firewall a little and see if you get any life. If so you may need to take the dash pad off that surrounds the intrument panel then take the cluster out and clean the connections. Not a very hard job to do cuz I can screw up a train wreck and managed to do this.

Honestly I don't know. I sent it to him, he told me what was wrong with it and he fixed it. I think it's a pretty standard problem. I don't see anything on his site but if you shoot him an e-mail he's usually good at responding.

Cost? Time?

By chance do you remember what it cost you to have it fixed and what kind of timeframe it took to get done?

Chime Chime....
The problem you are experiencing is typically due to a defective power supply on the digital cluster. This part needs to be replaced, but to remove it, you need to remove the cluster and desolder the part. We do this service and also update the microprocessor to display actual MPH - up to 199MPH. We can service the dash the same day we receive it. We have done hundreds of Regal digital dash clusters.
It can be removed easily by removing just 11 screws, including the slotted screws on either side of the mechanical odometer.
Pull the cluster out from the front and send it to Caspers. We'll do the rest.
