I have an 86 GN with a digital dash. Hate it. Anyone ever do a conversion to analog? I know that the factory gauges don't work well and I was planning on installing Autometer gauges anyway.

Hey Brooklyn! Are you the guy I was talking to at the NEBRA BBQ yesterday? You are sure to get an answer here on the board about your dash. Welcome to TB.Com.

Yup that's me. I can't live with that dash. I love everything else about the car but the dash is killing me!

What do you not like?

I love mine,,, seems to really fit the car. If it starts acting up i might not like it so well. I have a phantom temp and boost guage on the a-pillar(is that the word?)

I just don't like the whole look. But it's a catch-22 because the car is perfect otherwise. The moon roof, the paint, the mileage (16,000) etc. If there is any way to change it over Iwill.

Give it a little time to grow on ya. :)

The one in the GN doesn't bother me much anymore. ;)

Anyway if you wish to attempt the conversion to such a low mileage car make sure you start with the service manual to see what you are getting into.

I like mine. The analog looks like grandma's speedo to me (ducking now). The digital isn't spaceage, but it's a step up.

Still, I want to do GNX-ish gauges sometime. Problem is the VDO and SW look the best and they ain't cheap.

Digital Dash Blues..

Here's the cure!!! www.gnxdash.com Kiss that pain in the eyes goodbye with a 6, 8, or 9 gauge analog "Real" Instrument cluster.

Performance Instruments

I met Tom from Performance Instruments at Bristol this year. He was installing it on a car belonging to someone from the other board (TurboBuicks.com). It was Plug-n-Play! It not cheap for a full dash of VDOs is around $800.00. If I change it will be the Cyberdyne Digital dash.

I checked out www.gnxdash.com. I may have to go that route. One way or another it's going to cost a fortune. However, I plan on keeping this car for a long time so maybe it's worth it.

There is no such thing as a good cheap GNX dash.If you want
quality you are going to pay $$.Ive done alot of research and
you wont find a easier install or a better quality dash than
www.gnxdash.com Tom can build to fit your needs. He is
currently building mine. You might save a few $$ on another
unit but when you go to install it you'll wish you spent
a little more.Cant wait to get rid of that big idiot light GM
called a digital dash.

yeah i HATE the 85 speedometer but for some reason i love those factory tach and boost led gauges...it just looks so cool when you boost to see the lights light up...very ahead of it's time and i don't think cars today have such a setup...$875 for a new gnx dash? good lord! that is more than a turbo! yikes i would have to dig DEEP to get that...i would LOVE to have that gnx dash though...looks so professional...but i am poor:(

Yeah, that's what I mean. Before I'll throw $938.44 at a dash, there are other things I would get first.

Now if he gave me one.......I'd wear it proudly!

Horribly Expensive???

In response to Terry K:

Terry, I honestly appreciate your opinion but I think the statement "Horribly Expensive" was a bit harsh and ignorant.
Now before you get all bent out of shape because I said "Ignorant" let's define it.

Webster New Collegiate Dictionary definces "Ignorant" as:
1. Lacking knowledge or Comprehension of the thing specified.
2. Unaware or Uninformed

Taking into consideration that you may have No Idea what it costs to build an automotive component from scratch and to have that component work flawlessly, fit properly, and be asthetically pleasing in the intended application, The statement "Horribly Expensive" is without question Ignorant. I could say using a $1200 High Performance Ball Bearing Turbo on a 12 second Grocery Getter with a stock intercooler and injectors is "Horribly Expensive", but I would never do that. What would be "Horribly Expensive" is having to replace an engine because you had no idea your oil pressure had gone away and you were depending on an "Idiot Light" that doesn't activate until you're down to 5psi to warn you. I haven't met one GN/TR owner yet that buys a bone stocker and upgrades everything all at once. Most GN/TR owners upgrade in steps and purchasing a GNX Style dash is just another one of the steps some owners take to protect all the high dollar parts they've already aquired. EVERYTHING for the GN/TR is expensive. It's the nature of our beloved Beast and every GN/TR knows that going in or is soon educated in that fact when the Power Master brakes die or you upgrade the Turbo.
Most owners of a GNX style dash see it as an investment in their car. I've built 100+ dash upgrades ranging from $400 to $2000 and have NEVER had one person say it wasn't worth every dime they spent. It's true the world over, "You get what you pay for!".
I do what I can, when I can, to help make a GNX style dash affordable for ALL GN/TR owners that want this upgrade. It totally gets me off when a customer of mine sends me a picture of themselves and their car with one of my dashes in it. Countless happy customer emails keep me building when a shrinking, tight fisted economy tells me I should quit. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I've never met one Millionaire GN/TR Vendor. We all do what we do to help support a small community we love. So, if a GNX style dash or any other GN/TR product isn't something you're interested in or can afford that's fine. Just don't comment on it or slap a label of "Horribly Expensive" on it until you've done your homework.

If the statement I've made above offends anyone I sincerely apologize. It's not intended to humiliate anyone specifically, just educate readers across the board.

The digital dash has some advantages. One of them is the fact that you can change the point at which the red and yellow lights come on. Set the yellow light to 5lbs and then you have a "launch boost light" then set the red light to max boost, so you know when the boost is at max. Or set them to whatever works for your setup. You can also have the dash set up to read up to 199 mph. The digital will grow on you. I really don't like the analog.

Sorry. I should have said extremely expensive relative to the performance increase.

I'm not ignorant and I appolgize for that. I deleted the above message.

Terry

I like the digital dash too. I would not go through the expense of changing it. I think the digital car makes the car look more modern, and its pretty accurate except maybe for the fuel level (but thats a sending unit problem).

Actually, according to John Spina @ Casper's, the digital dash fuel gauge is more accurate than the analog dash one...
