R&R'ing engine for head replacement, port matching, detailing etc.

Should I install steel caps at #2 and #3 and line hone while the engine is out??

Just looking for 11.4's.

Thanks, Bob

It's definately better to be safe than sorry! I went with steel caps on the centers and a girdle, but then again I like to overbuild & detune a bit to make things last. :)

te-61 is a great turbo, what converter are you planning to run with it?

Doug C.

Thanks Doug...the converter will be a Yank 3000 lockup, other parts include V4, 50's, THDP, etc.

Who's girdle did you use?? Are the all the same except aluminum or steel...ie do they all use shims??

I have the same mindset as you about durability...which is why I've only ran 12.16 with a combo (my signature) that can probably get to 11.8 or so if I lean it a bit.

I went with the Race Jace girdle, very well done piece & comes with everything you're machinist will need.

Shims? As far as I know the caps are machined down so the girdle sits flush & an align bore needs to be done. Machine work needs to be pristine to prevent oil seep at the block/girdle surface. Buicks aren't as forgiving as a chebby small block!!! ;)

I'm running a 3200 rpm stall 9-11" converter with my 61 & street manners are even better than stock. Can't tell the converter is there unless I stand on the go-pedal & spool up is simply awesome.

Doug, can you get me 3 pieces of data from your combo..with respect to your converter.

with engine and trans fluid warmed to operating temp and foot/emerg brake fully engaged ie no wheelspin:
1) Engine rpm at 1 psi boost
2) Engine rpm at 5 psi boost

Then disconnect wastegate: car idling, brakes on, what is engine rpm 3 seconds after gas (go-pedal :) ) is floored and kept there??

The reason I ask is that you are obviously happy with your turbo/converter match...I've already got a Yank which is being modified ...this data would help that modification process.

Do you have a stock cam??
