Does anyone know how to keep their phone number from showing on a caller id machine?

Just as the title says...I am trying to call someone and I don't want them to know it's me calling...how do I do it to where I can call them and my number doesn't show up??? or is that even possible...because i constantly get calls that always say unknown caller or blocked call or something...

I thought it was generally a free service offered through your local phone company. I had mine done that way about 5 or 6 years ago. Not much sense having the feature that shows what number that is calling you when everybody has number blocking.
Basically what a scam.
Go figure

I have my cell phone provider block my # from showing on anyone's ID I call.

When I had a home land-line I had a gizmo hooked into my phone line that would automatically dial *67 when I picked up the phone to dial out. It would not "tone" when answering an incoming call. It's a COOL gizmo, but to answer your question you need to hit *67 before placing every outgoing call.

It is *67 around here too. Only problem with this is that some people's phone numbers won't accept a call from a blocked number. You could just call your phone number and have them block all of your calls and then there is another code you type in to unblock your number if you want someone to see your number on their ID or if you are trying to call one of those numbers that will not accept calls from blocked numbers. Kind of a lot of effort though to go through all of this. If I did not want someone to know it was me calling that bad I figure I would just be better off not calling them.

A buddy of mine has PRIVACY MANAGER from SBC Ameritech which automatically heads off any private incoming calls to his house to an automated greeting. It tells you to announce who you are before it'll ring into his house so I just hang up. I guess we both value our privacy.....the cost of being cops I guess.

I have the same thing. It's awesome. I haven't gotten one telemarketing call since the day the service went active.

*67 is a universal code for blocking your number. You have to do it before every call. I *think* (and I should know this 'cause I work for "the phone company") that the phone company is obligated to block your number upon your request. You can call them and they can set it up permanently.

It's interesting to note that if you're unlisted that does NOT mean your number is not displayed on caller IDs. You have to request the block specifically.

I just phoned my wireless cell phone provider and asked how my # can be shown if I choose since they have it blocked all the time. They said to dial *82 before dialing out and it will then allow Caller ID units to display my # to those whom I'm calling.
