What is everyone's opinion on a dump pipe?

I just ordered one and it arrives Saturday. I will let you know my real world results next week. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it helps out significantly.

Read a lot about it before some see some gains and some don't see any. I'm guessing depends on set up. Gonna be gaining some more looks that's for sure with an open dump

I've installed 2 electric dumps recently. One on my car and another on a friends car. Besides performance, it's just a really cool mod.

If you have a restrictive exhaust system it can help. At the same time it might cause a severe overboost condition and spit out a gasket if you don't adjust the boost accordingly.

If you've got a good exhaust, it's just noise.

I can't stand drone! I installed Dynomax VT mufflers on my car to get rid of the drone, I don't know how restrictive the mufflers really are yet but I will run open dump and through the exhaust in BG to see what happens. If it makes a difference I will go with an electric dump.

There is a write up on making a boost activated dump control. That's the way I want to go. Run 1 line to an old wastegate actuator and have it push open a butterfly. Same concept as the electric dump, only boost controlled. I found 1 place that makes and sells them but they are like $400. Pretty simple to make on the cheap. You can have it start to crack open at about 7 lbs. Nice and quiet TILL the boost comes on! Imaging the thoughts of the guy racing you, it'd be quite the change in sounds as you scream past them. Ah, save that for the fish kill section.

Turbo sounds awesome with the dump open! I saw about a 30 hp difference on a dyno from closed to open. But that's with a very restrictive exhaust, so when I open it I actually gain about 2 lbs of boost. I pretty much just leave mine open all the time, but the faster cars out there I don't think see as much benefit.

I have an electronic controlled one & other than mad turbo whistle, get no gains in power or change in boost pressure (really good 3"exhaust)

It sure makes people look when I open it, and makes my wife sink low in the seat & cover her face in embarrassment. She hates it

a good 3 inch exhaust will do the same thing performance wise but doesn't have that super bad ass soundbut then again blowing by people without any noise is pretty neat too

Thanks everyone for the replies. I decided not to go with the dump pipe. Does just fine without it. Only gets driven once a week in the summer anyhow.
