EGR solenoid filter

the filter with the cover on it that sits behind the EGR solenoid; mine is missing. Is it bad if the cover is missing? will it make the EGR valve not function correctly?

That's for the vacume "bleed-off" for the egr valve/diaphragm. The computer calls for egr, and the egr solenoid allows vacume to the egr valve/diaphragm assembly, when the computer stops calling for the egr, the solenoid allows air to enter through the filter so the egr valve closes. Without the filter, it allows unfiltered air to enter the system. With a clogged filter, the egr is slow to close, or even not close entirely, and that can effect driveability. :)

i still have the filter on there. Its just the cover thats missing. I guess I'll go replace the whole EGR solenoid. How much does one usually cost?

Don't buy the whole solenoid, no cover won't hurt anything. Also, that egr solenoid is common among GM vehicles,,, a used cap should be easy to find.
