Engine Noise in '07 Silverado

Hey Guys,

I have developed a squeek / rattle noise in the engine of my truck. Sounds like it's in the back of the engine low down which has me worried. Think it might be a rocker or balance shaft at best or a bearing at worst. I goes up and down with rpm.

Here's what does not change the sound:
Accessory belt on or off
Spraying water on the belt
AC on or off
In gear or park

Anyone have any experience with this? Any ideas on what else to check?

No it doesn't.

I should have been more specific. It's a 2007 Silverado classic with the 5.3L.

Yes just fixed a 03 yukon with the same prob.Ended up being a bad cam lobe and roller lifter.The metal broke down for whatever reason and caused the noise.Ive heard they have issues with rockers once in a while too.Take valve covers off.Run engine take a rag and with your hand push down on all the individual rockers and see if the noise changes.if not take one rocker off till the noise quites then you know the cylinder.and if the rockers ok then you have to go deeper.Good luck

Oh boy!!! That was my thought... and fear. The engine seems to be laying down now.

I had two differant trucks with same issue.One was an SS Silverado and one was a denali xl. Both were 6.0L. The part that was goofy was both were cylinder#6 exhaust lobes. Hope this is not your problem.

And, to make it even "more funner", the heads HAVE to come off, to get the lifters out!

is it still under warranty?
if so, take it to the dealer so the problem is at least documented before they tell you that it's "normal for these engines" and send you on your way and hope you forget about it until the warranty is over..

Not under warranty anymore. 104xxx miles.

Dealership told me on Friday that the flexplate is cracked.

Supposed to be fixed on Tuesday.

Guess what. New flexplate and the noise is still there!

I just got back from the dealer and they showed me one of the cam lobes in the center of the engine is pitted along with the lifter. Sounds like what GBGN1 posted.

The dealership / GM is paying 75% of the bill but it's still $1,050! Then they told me if it wasn't over 100K miles they might have paid for the whole thing.

could this have anything to do with no zinc in the oil?

along with other additives they have left out, seems like roller cams have been in production cars since the late 80's. just now seeing this....... I dunno, maybe add some additive at oil change time?

Interesting thought. Curious that it's only one lobe though. I think it's something related to a batch of cams.

My last truck was a 2000 Chevy and I sold it with 235,000 miles on the clock to the sales guy at work. He has put another 40,000 or so on it with zero problems. Driving it still today.

They can goodwill this repair. Did they charge you for the flexplate and install? hopefully not due to the misdiagnosis on there part. What are they going to do for the $1,050. I would have the engine replaced. The 6.0 I did in the ss silverado had lots of metal embeded in bearings. If they are going just install new cam and lifters I would not bother. You can find a low mile used motor cheaper than that and install it yourself.good luck

I first noticed the truck was down on power so I had planned to get it in for plugs and wires. Shortly after that I noticed the noise and thought it was in the accessories so I didn't hurry real hard to get it checked...

They are going to install new cam, lifters, timing chain set and associated gaskets, fluids, etc.

I am paying about 25% of the repair cost or basically the labor and no parts.

This is a company owned truck so working on it myself is not an option.

Well... after much screwing around by the dealer and TWO weeks i got the truck back yesterday.

It was a wiped cam lobe. Kind of hard to see in the picture but the lobe has about a 0.040" groove worn in it! It's like that lobe wasn't heat treated like all the rest. Pretty wierd.

Now where did all that metal go???

I'd change the oil/filter right now, cut the filter, and if it's full of cam lobe, I'd make a detailed record and take all the oil and filter back to the stealership. A oil sample report would go a long way, if it gets to a pi$$in contest....
