Exhaust leak maybe?

Took off the turbo.
The flange on the header that bolts up to the turbo has a buildup of carbon above where the 02 sensor is.
If that is an indication of a leak, how do I fix it - and does it matter that much?

My honest opinion is, the carbon build up does not mean exhaust leak. If it is truly carbon build up, you are probably experiencing a rich condition which will leave a coat of black carbon throughout your whole exhaust system as well as your combustion chamber.

One suggestion is to check A/F mixture and possibly lean out the fuel mixture.

Additionally you may want to run some sort of cleaner through your heads as well as check your plugs. Your performance may be suffering if your combustion chamber and plugs are coated in carbon. One thing to watch for is detonation from carbon hot spots in your combustion chamber.
