Please no BS just the truth. I finally got the trans back in the car from the shop and I shifts great except for one small problem. I starts out in second gear unless I pull it down in first or back into nuetral. It has the trans go shift kit in it and it shifts nice and firm. No I am not going to install another shift kit this is the second one! The first one did not work. The trans guy pulled the other shift kit out and installed this one. It shifts fine if I go thru the gears manual. I tossed the spring under the big gov weight and installed a weaker spring under the small weight. The car is a 85 monte carlo with 3.73 gears, 28 inch tall tires. Also the instuctions call for one gold washer under servo small piston and 2 gold washers above it. It only takes a small amount of force on the servo cover before the output shaft will no lond turns. I wonder ifthe band is too tight. Anyone ever have this problems?
I have heard the trans go shift kit will cause this problem. WHY?
What is the fix?

Brian

2nd gear start

Ask your tranny guy if he shimmed the TV plunger or installed a longer TV spring in the valve body. Too much TV can cause your
problem as well as others. :)

ok

Transgo on this trans tries to reinvent the wheel. Part of there kit enlarges the gov feed which in turn would take off in second gear . This is usually the cause with this kit. With all the help you have accessable to you in here and all the times that kit has been denounced, why in the hell would you use one? Greg, Alan, Chris, Mark and I have all PREACHED this yet once a month or so we see a post like this.

tv spring and band ?

Stock tv spring was used. When I was playing with the governor
I looked at the band and it seemed pretty tight, very little play at all. I just want to know if I should remove a washer on the servo pin to make it a little looserbeing there are three installed. Chris, Bruce, or Mark what do you think?

Thanks, Brian

Can you turn the output shaft clockwise by hand with a yolk in it?
(out of park of course)

CUSTOMER SUPPORT

Because I ordered a shift kit and a few parts from vendor x never had emails answered , phone calls returned or help from anyone when I called the shop and I asked to speeak to anyone that could help me and I left messages with no tech support. My trans guy (which is gone for the weekend now) owns 2 GNs, vette, and a mopar and belieaves in these kits. H enever had a problem with this kit in either one of the GNs and they hit hard! I know people run it into the ground that they are crap but atleast it works unlike the other shift kit that was installed. I know there are other people on this site that run them and love them. I know a few people for sure. What is boils down to is lack of customer support from vender x after I spent a good load of money and never got any customer support. Any way back to the subject at hand. How do I fix the problem or what do I need to tell the trans guy so he can fix it.

Thanks, Brian

turning output shaft

I can turn it until I press in on the servo then it stops.

governor feed

how are you talking about resticting the gov feed? With tappered plug at the end of the gov. Well I swapped govs to besure that wasm not the problem and it was not. I did inspect the other gov for the plug because I have the instructions in front of me now as I type. It says only install for stick shifting. Can you please clarify what you are talking about?

Brian

In the shift plate
the little diamond shaped plug they have you "smack" into the plate then redrill another gov feed hole.
ANFD if you can turn output shaft and push on servo to stop it as long as when you release the servo it turns again, you are fine.

Transgo

I'm curious, exactly what problems does that shift plate mod cause? The unit I'm rebuilding has the transgo repro kit in it. The only problems I ever noticed out of that one was it's reluctance to shift into 4th at anything below 60 or 65mph, depending on how you set the TV.

Bruce and others,

According to a frined of mine in the trans business,

Transgo had some problems with the original 200-4R Reprog kit. It fouled stuff up and got a bad reputation.

He says that TransGo has redesigned the kit, it no longer features the backshift on command.

I ordered one just to see what it does and compare to others.

It doesn't have you plug any diamond shaped hole, only one round hole. I would be more specific but I don't have my ATSG here and I don't know all the passages by heart like ya'll do :)

I'll try to get back if necessary and post what exact hole it is.

So I'm wondering if they have significantly changed the kit, it doesn't do anything permanent to the VB itself anymore....

Any thoughts?

It DOES have you install a longer TV spring though?

trans

85monte,
You took it to Darrel Arnette in Cordelle? If thats him he knows his stuff. His vette was running 7.0's in 1/8 in early 90's. His mopar runs a 4L80E and runs 6's on motor.
Might want to give him a chance to check it out.

TRANSGO

Yeah he fixed the trans for me and I installed it. I asked him about the second gear start and he said he has never seen it in the 2004r. He has the same kit in his 2 GN and didnt have the problem. I plan on letting him look at it again I am just trying to get ideas on what it could be and what we need to do to fix it. Darrel is a great guy and told me if I need anything let him know. I am just trying to help him get a few ideas on what the cause could be. I just picked it up Thursday afternoon from his shop and spoke to him Friday about the governor. I am just getting my ducks in a row so we dont spend my last week in the states on a wild goose chase. You are correct about his vette and let me tell you all the rest are very quick also. Where in GA are you at?

location

I am just east of Tifton on Hwy 319 where it intersects Hwy 32.

Transgo

Jake, I think you might be on to something there. I bought the transgo kit that's in this transmission before I knew anything about Bruce's, probably before I got on this board. I was warned about the ones requiring VB mods and made sure it wasn't like that before using it. All it did was have you plug a round hole and enlarge a few others in the plate, change some springs, and installed larger boost valves, seems like it modified the servo slightly (there is a washer), and I want to say it had a new accumulator spring.

It sure firmed up the shifting, not harsh, but quick and firm. Before that it slipped on the 1-2 & 2-3. Mine you, I was probably torturing that poor stock BRF behind my 388sbc, but it was holding it's own. The only real problems I found were the stripped stator splines and looks like the directs had excessive heating, they were burned and hot spotted the steels. That and I could never get the darn thing to shift into 4th til about 60-65mph regardless of throttle. (with the TV set right)

Morkai,

Nobody here is a fan of TransGo.

I'll agree they earned their bad rep on the 200 from the past, but being a pretty well known, long lived company in the trans industry, I believe in their products.

I've used them with great success in lots of other applications.

I have a BRF core for my car that will be getting Bruces kit and PR kit as well as some other stuff I need to order.

But the cheap core I'm building for my dad's car i may try the "new" TransGo for kicks.
It doesn't do any permanent mods, I will use a BRF seperator plate though.

I'm glad to here the kits have been working well for some of you guys.

I think their bad reputation may go away after everyone realizes the kit doesn't destroy the VB, and is reversible, and hopefully works.

I will pst results once I actually build these 2 up.....

Maybe another month or two now...
