re

i found bad lifters and replaced cam phasers as per tsb ran fine when done noise

ive always wanted an f250 diesel until i found out this was needed for even minor repairs like injectors.
an older dodge cummins looks real good now....

I want to see some pics of a '08 Super Dooty CC with a 6.4L with its cab in the air. :D  :D  :D

diesels suck

i havent had any 08 cabs off yet just give it some time :D :D :D
you can do injectors in 6.0L 7.3L with the cab on 6.4L i think you can but not for sure im not the diesel guy in the shop . I just do gas engine repair ,
transmission repair electrical, driveabilty and of course i try ride the gravey :D :D :D train or also known as wallet flushes :D :D
so not to many diesels for me :D :D

Since you work on Fords for a living I have a coupple questions for you.
1. Have you noticed any issues with the Ford flex fuel engines in the F150. I belive it is the 5.4 motor but I could be wrong.

2. I am thinking about going back to a diesel. Had a duramax before but I need more interior room and that leads me to the excursion. Not looking at a new one but I have heard better things about the 7.3 versus the 6.0. In your opionion wich is the way to go? Also You mention diesels suck, Why? I loved my D-max but just needed more room. Is it a ford thing?

Ok actualy more than 2 questions.

Thanks

re question

1. if i had to pick a diesel it would be the 7.3
and the reason why is the 7.3 was just more reliable i have seen more broken down 6.0 than i ever cared to see. they have a ton of injector
problems most of it steming from bad fuel pumps . i remmber last winter for about to 2 weeks it never got above +2 to 5 degreesand it seemed like every tow truck that came in had a 6.0L straped to its back that wouldnt run or start and it wasnt just gelled up fuel. lots of glow plugs problems and FICMS (fuel injection control modules ) lots of reprogaming up dates
but hay im not a diesel goo roo . oh yeah it was about a 1 in 10 ratio 7.3 to 6.0
2 and the reason i dont like diesels is they smell
and they blow to much black smoke for me and the loud exhaust drives me nuts
3 i own a 6.8 V10 super duty cc sure the fuel milage isnt very good but hay who buys these trucks for fuel milage ?

4 heres my 2 pennys for thought
when i bought my truck gas was i think;) $2.50 to $3.00 a gal
and diesel was $3.20 plus i have found that diesels get 13 to 17 mpg may bee even 18 in a ford diesel and thats streching it any thig over 18mpg i would call BS now the chevy i have heard 20 but that was from someone i wouldnt beileve but thats just me . the dodge ive heard 20 22 unloaded and ive heard from most people
9 to 12 mpg towing on any diesel
every v10 guy i have ever talked to said 10 13mpg i have personaly seen15mpg on my way to texas but that was regular fuel not ethnal when i used eathnal i seen 10 no better than 12mpg unloaded
and 11 was the best towing a mid 80s chevy 1ton cc
but any way i just could not justify paying $5000 to $8000 more than what i bought my v10 for and then pay .30 to .60 cents more a gal for diesel (but right now diesel is .25 cents a gal cheaper than gas in iowa )
and as far as power wise really in stock form a diesel doesnt really have any more power then a bigger cubic inch gas engine . think about it take the turbo away from a any diesel and do you think sales would be as good as they are ???? i dont but thats just me sorry if i got under anybodys skin

my favorite thing i have ever heard from a diesel guy is well at least my diesel doesnt down shift on a hill. F##K that S##t here is what i have to say about that:biggrin: :D it is this. the reason the diesel dosent down shift is beacause the pcm wil not let the converter unlock when the engine reaches a certin rpm because the engine will over rev as for a gas engine the pcm
will let the converter unlock at over 50% throttle beacause the engine still has a few thousand revs left in it. (at certin speeds)the diesel dont .they already dont turn very high revs. but any way sorry to blow off about the diesels and gas engines i just get wound up because when i get on this topic no fowl intened. i have 1 friend who thinks the diesel engine was the best thing god ever blew breath into and i dont all i hear is that his truck is better than mine but you know what mines
almost paid for . me 1 year left! him 3 plus! its been my expriance that the best automobile is one that is paid for. thats the kind i like
as far as the ethanal fuel and the f 150 i really dont know of any problems
there might be a pcm reflash i can check if you need just let me know
any way i need to go to bed i ve got lots of broken FORD to fix tommarow:D :D :D lol

Thanks!

I would have to say that I can attest to the duramax getting decent milage. I had an 02 extended cab 2500 4x4 and drive about 7 miles to work in combo of stop and go and highway. Consistantly averaged 18. We also ran a ladnscape biz part time and they guy that worked for me pulled a heavy trailer from time to time and it would still get 18. Several times on longer trips I would get 20 with combo of highway and city. The best was 300 miles all interstate at 70 MPH and got 26 MPG. I was running a hypertech programer set at 55 HP increase and a tank full of b20 (ran the 90HP setting for a while but actually had a drop in milage due to my right foot)

I loved that truck but I could not get 3 small kids in the back with infant seats. I wish GM would put that engine in a suburban. That is why I was wondering about the excursion but it does not sound like I would be as happy with the 7.3 as I was with the d-max. Also the 7.3's are the older ones and in my price range. Cant afford a new one unless I go to the bank and that is not happening. Looked at chevy crew cabs with a little more room but you are still limited to 5 people. Currently driving an expedition and the milage sucks but it does not look like I will find anything better. Consitantly in the 14 range.

You also mention running the V10 on ethanol. Was that a 10% blend or 85%? If the latter, I was un aware that the bigger engines were flex fuel capable.

Thanks for your reply

LOT's of missinfomation out there!!
Fact is, the 7.3 in the 2000-2003's is the best motor available. Far better than it's follow-on 6.0L and the jury's still out on the new 6.4's.
I love my Excursion and will keep driving it till it cave's in on its self. the 01, 02 Excursions should fit your price range and there's plenty of good ones available.
I'm enjoying 16.5-17mpg combined city/highway (commuting), and when on long trips the highway mileage jumps up to 19.5-20.
When towing my 24' car hauler the mileage drops off to 14.

Nope.....the '97 7.3 is the best. I have forged rods while the later 7.3 have powdered rods;)

7.3 PSD all the way....no emission junk

Thanks Dave for the info. Good to hear a perspective of an owner. I have been keeping my eyes open for a truck like yours, needs to be 4 wheel drive due to the winters.

gnxtc2, point taken, but looking for an excursion. I am not positive but they did not make those in 97. I had a 97 expedition and When I pulled my 26 ft camper I would get 6 MPG!!!

Unless you're thinking about off roading (not the best idea for an 8,000 suv), I'd think twice about 4x4. When I got mine (4x2) I lived in WI and MI for 3 years, and never had the need for 4 wheel drive, ever.
While I'm a Ford truck lover, I hate the superduty 4 wheel drive solid front axle system. I didn't like the way it drove or rode when testing them.
I like the way my 4x2 handles and rides and it got my through some pretty nasty WI and MI winters.

Rumors have it that there is a certain year Excursion that is an awesome tow vehicle. Then the next years Ford did something to the suspension and it is all over the road.

Maybe you can go to TheDieselStop.Com - www.thedieselstop.com and find out more over there.

Mine tows like a dream. But then again I've ridden in a couple 4x4's and they had terrible wander. I have no proof, but IMHO it has to do with the solid front axle. (opinion only!)

Ifloyd3, the ford mechanic...

... neeed some help please. (or anyone else)

My 02 expy just lost every ounce of coolant in the driveway and about 2 miles before getting home.

Pulled in form little league and the kids said "whats that smoke" looked up to see white smoke from the engine, got out to a huge puddle of coolant and noticed a trail into my driveway. We had to leave again quick for somthing else so I did not take that close of look at it but we went back the way we came and noticed the trail of coolant started about 2 miles from home. Guages did not move at all and truck ran fine. Heater hose? Frezze plug? Water pump??? Other???? From what I did see it looks as if it is comming from the back of the motor, white smoke could be from coolant hitting the hot exhaust. No oil in the coolant or white smoke out of the tail pipe. 5.4 with about 110K miles on it.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like the GN will be pressed into service for a day or two. Gets better milage so not a huge loss :)
