Hi All,

I've got major drivability issues! So far, I've managed to log 350 miles, mostly around town for short periods. Last week, we went about 20 miles each way to a "cruise" and parked to watch. On the way home, got a CEL for 20 seconds that cleared, then the engine started missing and popping through the tailpipe all the way home. Several days later, my son and I went out for a 40 mile drive to duplicate the problem. After driving 30 uneventful miles, the same symptoms appeared. Unfortunately, we did not have T-Link on it, as it would not connect (later found the ignition key wasn't fully "on"). This time, it got progressively worse, finally stallling at an intersection without a restart. We had to dump the ECM memory and let the computer re-learn to get us home. Right before it stalled, I noticed the EGT was over 1500°! This was driving normally with NO horsing around. When we got home and managed to figure out T-Link, it showed a very lazy O2 sensor, a code 45 [rich], and the TPS at idle had somehow slipped to 0.24V. Those are the only things that stood out.

Today, we changed the O2 sensor, reset the TPS and verified full range of motion with no glitches, changed the fuel filter, verified the static pressure @ 44#. Tried another drive, but didn't make it 1/2 mile before it became totally undriveable! Babied it home in 1st gear, changed the chip (3 different ones), swapped ECM's, swapped MAF's, NO IMPROVEMENT!

Looking for ideas of where to go next, any help appreciated!

Drop back ten yards and.....

swap another coil/module on it and see what happens.

Unplug the cam sensor, once running, and see what happens.

Swap ecms.....

One at a time for the above. :D
 
My first guess is coil pack. I'm guessing the heat it causing too much resistance.

I would pull the cap on the cam sensor and make sure it hasn't broken it's little keyway and is free turning. ALso check the torque on your balancer bolt. I have seen them work loose and allow the inturpter ring on the back of balance jump the sensor intermittenly.

I've been pretty frustrated lately, as you may be able to tell. I 'preciate ya'll reading through my lengthy post!

I do have another coilpack/module and will swap it out. Hadn't thought about the cam sensor (God knows, I should!), I'll try that first, before the engine gets too hot. Already tried swapping the ECM's and chips, no help there. And the balancer/crank sensor will be real easy to check. Now I just need a BIG dose of patience to get started!

Well, the plugs went from looking "as new" @ 350 miles to "so sooty they wouldn't fire" @ 400 miles. How could this have happened?

We changed the plugs & coil pack/module, chk'd the crank and cam sensors, and put my original Lubrant chip in the spare ECM. It now starts & idles great, but will not get to drive until tomorrow.

I'm thinking... on the coil pack, I had to remount it on a custom bracket because it was interfering with the WW motor. The bracket is aluminum, but I spaced the module off the aluminum 'plate' with washers (for added air flow under the module). This time, I ditched the washers and smeared the module with dialectric silicone grease for heat transfer. Did the original mount directly to the metal plate?
 
Yep...mounts directly to the plate...I had #3 and #6 plugs do that when my coil pack went south...they kept fouling...used Caspers tester and there it was...intermittent no fire or very weak at high RPMs...replaced the coil pack and plugs have looked fine since...
 
Grab a couple of ring crimp connectors and make a ground wire from one of the module mounting bolts to a ground point right behind the module on the firewall. Doesn't have to be a full-on ground strap. I ran into some misfiring issues on the interstate a few weeks ago and did this based on other's claims as a potential fix. Cheap to try for sure! I'll be testing the fix this weekend myself.
