Fluid level too high

[85 Riviera]

I overfilled my trans just about a full quart and I noticed slightly softer full throttle shifts from 1-2. I checked the fluid for bubbles but there where none, My question is does the fluid level need to be low enough so that it does not reach the band because I think thats whats going on with mine at this higher fluid level but I might be crazy. Needless to say I will be droping the level back down today If the trans fluid level is lower than the band then how does the band get fluid for lube and cooling?

The way I understand is that when you over fill the trans 1 qt Its good helping prevent sucking air on hard launches. But can be bad because the fluid is higher up into the pick up tube and the rotating assembly which can aerate and foam the fluid. I thinks its best to go to a deeper pan with a longer pick up tube, which adds capacity while keeping the fluid below the rotaing assembly.
