OK hi I just signed up to this forum because I'm saving up to buy a GN, and I wanna know the stuff to look out for. Especially pertaining to rust. Can you guys help me out? I know that these are 20+ year old cars and that they can rust anywhere. But I wanna know the specifics. I really appreciate any help you guys can give a forum newbie here. And I'm not really familiar with this forum or any forum because this is the first one I've ever signed up to so any advice would be great
 
It would help to know what area you''re from. The cars in your region might be less susceptible to rust. In my opinion, as long as the body is in good shape, the rest of the car can be fixed. Now I know there can be exceptions, but that's a good place too start. I'm in Canada, and it's hard too keep my car in one piece.

The trunk passenger/driver kick panels,lower door,t-top,astro roof, Floor pans,seat belt striker,frame at the body mounts,lower A pillar,fuel tank strap area,muffler and just about everything else. The ones I listed are from personal experience on most g-bodies. Look over every area possible. I try to look at one in sections to make sure I'm thorough. Check out http://www.gnttype.org/general/buyguide.html its a good article to get your mind rolling. Also kirbans GN guide really gets in depth on the 86-87 cars. Good luck.

If you're worried about rust, stay away from T-tops. In fact, if you want to go fast just stay away from T-tops anyways.

If you have a choice in the matter get a southern car. From what I've gathered from the salt areas, the doors/floor/qtrs/etc.. like to rust out. The body bolts like to seize in place making body bushing replacement a Greek tragedy.

The southern/western cars seen to be pretty rust free as long as they aren't parked in a hay field for a few decades.
 
The rule of thumb on rust is: if the car you're looking at has ANY visible rust, multiply that by about 10 to determine how much hidden rust there is. Especially if looking at a t-top car like earl eluded to. Anyone who tells you differently is not looking after your best interests, more so if its coming from the cars current owner.
 
Well since one of you asked, I'm from Pennsylvania. I'm planning on spending $10,000 on a GN to purchase it. I figured that 10K would be enough to get myself a good example. I don't want a "Project car" that I'm gonna "restore as I go" because that never works. My brother tried that with a 71 Chevelle and now it's been sitting in our garage for the past 10 years so I don't wanna go through that.

First, check your bank account.....should be at least five figures, but never let it get below four figures.....also, check your wallet daily.....I guarantee you that it'll lose weight quickly....even if it's not a member of Weight Watchers. Turbo Buicks have a sneaky way of siphoning money out of one's wallet when you're not looking.:shifty:

Have plenty of aspirin on hand........and be of legal age to drink large quantities of beer when frustrated......always have knee lotion to ease the concrete burns you'll definitely get from working on it going crazy to "improve" performance....make sure your marriage or relationship with your girl is solid, as I also guarantee you you'll be spending more time with your Grand National than your significant other. And be very, very nice to all the guys here on this forum, as you don't want to piss them off......they are of a wealth of knowledge on these cars, more helpful than 10 years of automotive schooling......you piss off just one of them and it's like losing a page out of the GM Service Manual, so be nice....as they are nice to you....all are more than willing to help you with whatever problem you'll sure to have with your "new" Grand National...as long as I don't chime in.:cautious: Feel comfortable to always discuss anything that comes up with your GN here.....you've got an incredible group of guys here that know more than GM did when they made these cars...ask me how I know.:D I trust no one anywhere on earth with my GN than with these guys....they've always had my back, and they'll watch yours. They will NOT steer you wrong....most honest group I've ever had the privilege to be a part of.:happy:

Good luck with finding a good one, but they are out there...get one before they are priced as high as a Formula One race car.:eek:

That budget most likely won't allow you to buy what you want to buy.

Even with the economy the way it is, rust free GNs that far north that don't need money don't really exist at $10K.

Unless you settle for a hotair, you might stand a chance.

Well I'm looking for one that doesn't have bad rust I'm not really looking for one that is super perfect

Where in PA are you? I'm in the Philadelphia/Bucks County area. You could call Denis Kirban or Injection Connection they both deal with GN's.
