forward drum ?

Disassembled a core trans yesterday--the forward drum is solid black--not paint--maybe some kind of heat treated. Ever see one, if so is it any better than a stock drum?

Most likely a heat treated drum. The one I got from Art Carr years ago was like that. Better than stock not as good as billet.
