Found a 4.1 in a Sedan De Ville, '82 model. The car runs good but had a car sitting on top so I couldn't get the hood open to look at it. I plan on getting the crank but was wondering what else I should take. :)

newbie question, does the 4.1 crank just stroke the 3.8? or do you need a 4.1 block. How much larger is the bore on a 4.1? compared to a 3.8

I'd take the whole thing. You could probably sell the four barrel intake for a couple bucks.

Its the same stroke as the 3.8's. Its desirable because it's the same as the turbo cranks. The 4.1's bore is 3.965 (I think).

Nope, its a Buick V6 and yes you can use the crank in a 3.8. The crank will have the rolled fillets on the rod journals (unless it has been changed out on a rebuild) so it will be good for a turbo application.

According to GM, the Cadillac Motor Division list two 4.1s for their carline. One is a V6 and the other is a V8. So as stated by previous post, is it a V8 or a V6?

Easy Answer

If the side of the car has a badge that reads "4.1", then it is the buick 4.1 V6. This is extremely rare.

If the badge reads "4100", then it is the Caddy V8.

Is there a specific year that had them or does anyone know the year range and the car models this block was available in. Also does anyone know the vin, that way you could run through the junkyard checking the vin looking like a complete psycho:D

Oh, I thought I could just cut 2 of the journals off.LOL Of course it's a v6. Yes, the badges say 4.1, not 4100v8. It was a surprise to call my buddy at the yard and have him say" Yea, I got one, might even have a couple more." I could only open the hood about an inch but I could tell it's a 6. Seems kinda funny, that BIG Coupe De Ville with a v6. He told me the crank would be cheap, I'll pull it myself to save some bucks, but I just might get the whole thing.

So can some eruditious and benevolent members steer us commoners the sum of all such gm units which employed the much touted 4.1 v-6s?
TIA (way better than KIA)

I remember working on a Cadillac 4100. It had a mains knock at 50,ooo miles. It was an aluminum motor. The mains wouldnt even take a retork , the alum. was so soft. I helicoiled, rebuilt and it still knocked. Real piece of shat. GM reallly messed this one up and it was known to be bad.
Hey B4Black, thanks for info on cars with 4.1v6. So I guess its a crank donor.

Are the blocks known to be any better(higher nickel content, etc.)

Does boring out to 4.00 create any issues? There has to be many more parts for a standard chevy bore than the speciallly order stuff for the 3.8.

By enlarging the piston does that load the mains anymore or creating bearing failure sooner?

How bad will the heads on a 4.1? they're already undersized on a 3.8 nevermind a 4.1.

Just some things on my mind.
