So far my car has a lot of dents and dings, a rust hole about 2x6 on the back quarter driver's side, a big hole infront of the drivers seat, crumbling rust on the front bottom corner of the driver's door, AND I noticed a couple of nights ago when I was gonna put the tranny in that I have crumbling rust/ soft spot around the mount in the back in front of the rear end on the passenger side, the brace that goes along the floor to both body mounts is rusted out around the mount too. What should I do, the rust on the body isn't what scares me, its the rust in the back around the mount and the hole that is in front of my seat that stretches to the door jamb, looks like it is before the seam. Also notices a dime size hole in the bottom of the firewall, easy to get at though. THe car is exactly what I wanted, but if its too much to fix I might dump it. Anyone got a rough idea of what the cost would be just for the underneath rust? Whats gotta be done to get at it and fix it? I know of a 83 that has perfect quarters but I don't know of the rest of the car. I can score it for 200 bucks. As a side note I am not a body man and would not tackle taking the good stuff off the 83. Input is great before I go any further with this car, thanks guys.

Have a body shop look at the car before you go any further. I have an 87 limited with that peice of **** astro roof. gm ran the hoses for drains down inside of rear quarter panels .so the water runs down in to rear wells and across rear of back seat. i started doing body work myself. what a mess. the problem is i like doing everything myself to save money and to learn new things. I learned something new. I cant do body work. Being a mechanic by trade i traded off labor with a friend of mine that owns a body shop. and thats all they got right now is the body. I have the frame all done in por 15 sitting in my garage. If i knew what it was gonna take to do this I would have bought a gn with low miles for $25000.00 and saved a bunch of money. but i have had this car since 1989 so i guess im screwed. there is alot of good body shops out there. you have to shop around. the only bad part is the support on the body . mine was not real bad but it needed some patches in that section. get that doner car before it gets away. you can cut alot of the parts off that car or just start swapping parts to that one.get some pics and i will have my buddy look at them for a very rough estimate

The support in the back looks pretty solid except where the mount is at. THat's pretty much where all that rust is located, well that and all along the floor where the frame is, basically where the doors run. I guess I won't really know until I get the carpet up and see whats covered. As far as the donor car goes it is just a shell, no doors, no front clip, but I think it has a radiator support which I could use if it isn't damaged. Never got the trunk open on it or looked under the car. I felt under the quarters and the lip underneath has a slight surface haze but they are very straight and solid so maybe the rest of the car is the same way. I know of a body shop about 75 miles away that does good work and are very reasonable. Got a quote on my camaro that was almost this bad for 1500 bucks, with jams painted, but no floor repair included in that price. I'm gonna go ahead and get this thing put together and running for now and I'll get some good pics within the next couple of weeks of the car and all the bad spots, thanks.

If I were home I'd post some pictures of what I'm working on. The floors weren't the big problem but I'm thinkin that rust your talking about in the rear is the same area I have a problem with.

I'm basically replacing the entire rear area between the floor pans and the trunk.
It took me awhile to find a replacement for the mount area.

Greg

Well I hope mine goes smooth. I'm worried about getting that brace back in as it needs to be tacked into the quarter panel. Going to be tight under there with the car only up on stands.
