i was really starting to get worried. i had what i thought was a rod knock. (i always assume the worst) and fellow buick owners who heard the noise also mentioned it could be trouble. the weird thing was i also had a chirp. but they didnt seem to happen at the same time. pulled the pan, nothing. pulled the oil filter, nothing. replaced the idler arm/pulley, still the same.on the recommendation of a friend i replaced the serpentine belt and PROBLEM SOLVED!! the belt looked ok but when i put it back on for reference the knock came back! waaaaahhhhooooooo!!!

Was your old belt stretched or longer than the new one? What did the alignment marks on the tensioner show?

I am curious because the marks on my tensioner shows my belt is at max too long and I am getting some knock I can't track down also.

yes the old belt was stretched and longer than the new one. i did not check the marks on the tensioner. (to be honest i didnt know their were marks) what someone had suggested was to pour a little bit of water w/dish detergent on to the belt while the car was running. and presto my "rod knock, lifter chatter, loose converter bolts" noise went away. needless to say im very happy. good luck with yours

Thanks for the reply. Glad you found your trouble.

My car is put to bed for the winter, but a new belt is on the list for replacement. Which brand and part number / length did you use?

I went with the stock replacement dayco brand for 20 bucks from autozone

I think the stock replacement is a little long! I replaced my stock belt last year and started having Voltage issues as soon as it stretched a little. I went with a slightly shorter belt... Gates...I'll post the number later, gotta look.

I'm subscribed. at idle I have a loud chirruping noise. IIt goes away as revs rise. I replaced the idler wheel, but no change. I'll try the water/dish cleaner trick. Is it likely that as the belt stretches it could be too loose at idle and cause the chirruping noise?
It is not a knock and it is intermiittent and annoying.

Glad yours turn out to be something benign. I had a chirp in my small block in my Chevelle. Finally decided to pull the motor and the main bearing were eaten.

someone said that if the belt was to get too loose, either the belt or idler arm could be slapping around causing the noise. and in my case sometimes it sounded like a knock and sometimes it sounded like a chirp. either way it was driving me crazy:mad:

Seen that b4. Once worked on a car that had the same problem. I must have spent 2 hours jacking with everything else. I just could not accept that a perfect looking belt can be the problem. Shame on me.

I also run slightly shorter than stock.

someone else mentioned running a shorter belt. i think im gonna do that. but in my excitement i went with a stock replacement.

Well I tried the dishwater/soap trick on the belt and the chirruping stopped right away. Thanks, nice to see an easy fix on these cars for a change:biggrin:

id appreciate you getting the size. thanks

I had the chirruping noise from the ass. belt on a blazer and was told by a custom sound shop that spraying windex on it would stop it. I tryed it and it worked for over a year till I had to do it again.
