Hey guys, we all talk of making the cars faster, what kind of fuel economy are you seeing with your set ups? I have a 87 GN I just bought with 50lb injectors, and 70mm turbo/93 octane Joe Lubrabt Chip. 218 competition cam champion race ported iron heads. Had it only 3 days, running it hard and have gone through almost half a tank of gas with 90 miles. Of course 4 nice burnouts did not helopmatters, but curious as to the efficiency of the car when adding all the goodies. Has 373's in the rear and a 3500 non lock converter.

Curios to hear what others are getting for mileage.

A heavy foot, 373 gears and 3500 stall won't help you get mileage. Most people don't buy a turbo Buick for gas mileage.

I have 50s and get 22-24 mph running 70-80 with air on on the interstate. I have a lockup converter and 373 gears.
My friend, Don Riggins, told me he got over 27 mph going to Bristol last week end. He has the 50s as well. So you can get good mileage out of the 50s, it just depend on your combination and your right foot.

Gary:)

I've broken 30 MPG twice now with 55s.
But, the problem is to do that means lean, and lots of timing. Which is tough on bearings, while they cooling system can handle the heat, the oiling system doesn't do as good of job.

And lean and lots of timing means high combustion chamber temps., so when you do get into it the engine is detonation prone so that means you or whoever programed your chip adds fuel to cool the chamber as you get into it, which drops the EGT and slows the spooling of the turbo.

I've come to realise the GN isn't an economy car. Just to get mileage vs the downsides ain't worth it in my book.

i've got the 50's and i average about 20-22 on the highway and 15-17 in the city...not bad for a potential low 11 second daily driver;)

Well, drove about 90 Miles on just over a 1/4 tank. Of course most of those miles were in full boost, New toy. Laid down quite a bit of rubber as well playing with the line locks. Has factory rims with bald 215-65-15's. Moving to 245-45-17's this week, then not more smoking them at will only when lined up with a pony car.

I just made a trip in my car last weekend.3 people and the trunk was full.Friday night drove 200 miles and got 24mpg.Then Saturday drove 243 miles and got 22 mpg. Then Sunday we came home 200 miles and got 22 mpg.We was in TX.OK.and KS.
we set the cruise to the speed limit.
I have 50's in my car and 3.42's.

I got 26-27 mpg w/50#ers, Joe Lubrant street chip and a -51 turbo driving to the 2001 Nats...

i was getting 25-26 on the road with stock 3.42 gears and lockup converter and car went 127 thru the traps when i got there..:D

i dont attempt to check it around town cause the throttle is always on the move..

This is nuts,
I am only making 10 mpg at BEST !

STOCK INJECTORS/'87 turbo ... 36 psi fuel pressure.. i just dont get it, what do you guys think? you people are all saying 20+ mpg.. thats just insane.. that'd cut my gas expense in HALF...

WTF DUDE! Its a hot air!!!!

I got 25ish with the 50's

Just for the record Jay, when my car was all stock hotair, it would only get at the most 20mpg on the highway on a roadtrip...Around town, at the most, it would get maybe 14mpg, combined city/highway driving....

With my new setup(turbo, injs, IC, etc) combined it's more like 17-18mpg, but I've got a heavy foot...But on a long trip on the highway, it's like 26-27mpg...

how th ehell does a hotair use twice the fuel of a intercooled car which requries more fuel than a hotair car due to increased air charge?!!!!!

that sucks, i need to sell the damn thing ;)

I just drove my car 1,300 miles to bradenton FL. and got 25mpg running way rich w/ crappy chip. My 98 silverado vortech 350 couldnt even keep up with a 20sum gallon tank and my car was loaded down heavily! No boost at all though...Otherwise it will drop quick.

The size of the injectors shouldn't affect gas mileage. If bigger injectors are putting more fuel in, then the O2 reading should trigger the computer to reduce the duty cycle of the injectors.

The computer is still trying to maintain that optimum air-fuel ratio all the time.

Just drove to bradenton? I live in bradenton, did you move or what? i know of a couple fast TR's over here ;p

Ya, I moved here a week ago. Im staying with wife's family right now in palmetto and I have bunch more family in orlando. So I will be around.;)
