Jackson noticed my pump was buzzing loudly a couple of weeks ago so I bought a new one to swap out before it died. My mechanic found that there was a large amount of rust in the tank and it was plugging up the fuel pump sock. He said they couldn't clean the tank out and maybe I should just get a new one. Guess the baffles in the tank prevent fuel and sludge from being poured out. Anyone have an idea on how to clean out the tank? I was thinking of using an old pump to suck out the sludge but don't know if it's strong enough. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Greg,
IMO I wouldn't try to fix the tank, just replace it. If you try to save it and end up starving the engine with a plugged fuel filter or sock, you know what will happen:eek: A new tank with baffles is big $$$$$ but TurboD might have one for sale:)

Fuel Tank

Yup I agree. Get a new one if you can afford one. My guess is that there about 150.00 or so. If you cant afford it. you can pick up cleaning materials at your local parts store made specifically for gas tanks. I've also come across some kits that work great too. You can look online at the eastwood company for stuff like that.

I remebered that Guy mentioned he seen some rust in one of your gas cans. Could the rust be comming from your VP gas container or since your car had SO little miles on when you bought it the original owner may not had the gas tank fill all the way. Also when I did my fuel pump I also noticed some metal particals on the bottom of the tank and was easily removed with a magnet.

Shucks, I forgot about the rust in my gas can. Thought that was just a fluke or something. Tried changing my fuel filter last week and a bunch of rusty gas came out of it. Guess I'll be pricing tanks on monday.

Greg, I got the out of my car for sale. I didn't see any rust when I took it out. Let me know. Dean

Hey guys, thanks for the advice and offers. For peace of mind, I ordered a brand new tank today. They don't have the real deal at GM anymore so I'm getting a replacement unit from Poston. Hope it works out. If not, I may be begging people to sell me theirs!

i bought a new tank for my GN from Schuman a couple years ago, correct part number and everything. it came without the slosh baffles. it was $370 back then.
