I'm going to fix a trans pan gasket leak that I have had since having a trans service done. It was done about six months ago and leaked since I got the car back. I don't trust the mechanic that did it so I'm fixing it myself. Heres the question. I have the 200 4r trans with an Art Carr deep pan. Should I use a cork gasket or go with the right stuff only? Or a combination of both? Also anyone know how many quarts of ATF with the deep pan?

Imo

I prefer cork with a thin coat of vaseline on each side to prevent it from sticking. I would guess 10 qts.

Cork

 I like the cork gasket. Cross tourqe the bolts and do not over tighten. I use a thin coat of gasket sealer on the pan side. No leaks on my last one. Good time to install a drain plug if you don't have one already.

OK looks like a cork gasket.
The 10 qts I'm assuming is to fill the converter also. I'm only changing the gasket and refilling. Does this change the amount of fluid to use?

I would use a fiber gasket. Not cork.

With a cast aluminum pan, you shouldn't be having leakage issues, Be sure it is actually the pan, and if so get a fiber (Farpack or Accopack) gasket.
Then I would have the pan surfaced or look for a burr or other obvious defect.

A monkey could put one of those pans on without messing it up.

Well I changed it using cork. No leaks.

Looks like the "monkey" used only great stuff and it did leak.

Ya,
The "Right Stuff" is excellent stuff, but NOT for a transmission.
Pan gaskets go on dry, no sealant.
I use the fiber gaskets, much better quality than anything else except the newer OEM type rubber embossed deals.

They are about $2-3 each instead of less than $1 each like the cork, but they aren't as porous as cork and not as easily overcompressed.

Sounds like your monkey screwed the pooch. :D Glad you got it fixed.
