I finally discovered that the small but irritating leak I have on my 200 R4 is coming from the shaft seal. Is it a big deal to replace the seal with the trans in the car? Should I use the stock replacement part or is there something better out there?

Thanks

There is a tool that removes the shift shaft seal without having to remove anything but the shift lever. Then you just reinstall another stock seal without ripping it and you are good to go. Trans tool makes one and any transmission shop should have one. It comes with a driver to install the new one.
If you want to "backyard" it, drill a tiny hole in the old seal VERY carefully and then install a tiny screw into it maybe 3 or 4 threads in. Then use a pair of pliers to pull out. Remove any burrs the lever left on shaft with a file smooth. Then reinstall new seal by driving in with a deep socket that fits it. Not really the way to do it, but if you cannot get the tool, it can be done if done with care. If you want more info, call or email me and leave me a phone number and I will walk you through it. Good luck.

Thanks for the detailed response. I'll check with my local trans shop to see if they will lend me the correct tool.

Thanks again.
