Yeah, but I had to at least respond!:D
I definitely know what you mean, though. Of course, you can take things too far (I don't think that happened in this case, BTW). I used to be into Corvettes. Talk about anal-retentive owners! Jeez!

Like the thread's title, it's about respect for other people's property. Common sense and proper raising should make this easy. Unfortunately, that's not the case many times.

I think that was a little too much. You could have just said "Do you mind?" with a little forceful tone rather than looking at the kid like you were going to kick his ass.
I dont think he had enough time to analyze different ways to get the kid off his car. I'm sure most of our first reactions in that situation would be a little harsher than "Mind your hands". I say good job on restraining yourself Black Box.

What'd I do?

Man, first it's my 30's rod that's a problem, now NASCAR's to blame. I'm guilty of being fans of both!

Just kidding, my skin's not that thin! I must admit, I just thought I was a redneck until my first trip to Talladega! ;)

Oh yeah - gn85 isn't kidding about leanig on his car - I was at E-Town w/my GN and from a distance he thought I was leaning on his car. He sent his girl-friend (wife?) to talk to me about it.

When she saw I wasn't leaning on it everything was fine - at first I thought she was going to break my arm or something.

Oh.. that was you? Can I ask what you were doing? Because it sure looked strange to see your hand inches off the hood of my car.

I was going to come over, but she wanted to. Thought it might be more fun.

I know exactly what you guys are talking about when it comes to the "classic" musclecar guys looking down on anyone who isn't them. I had a very amusing situation with some of them once...

In addition to my GN, I have several other cars, one of which being a 72 Chevelle Convertible. I was at a gas station one day, and a 1968 Chevelle and an early Chevy II pull in. Both are very nice cars, pretty clean. Both have older drivers (50's+). Bear in mind, I'm 24...

So I walk up to the Chevelle driver, and say "Thats a very nice car you have there". He just looks at me like I'm not worthy of a response, and starts filling up. I walk over to the Chevy II, and I'm looking at it. The owner walks over and says "It's a Chevy II... I wouldn't expect you to know what that is. You kids these days just don't "get it" ". I turned around at him, paused for a second, and I was like "I guess you're right... I probably couldn't appreciate a musclecar, huh?" He looks over at his buddy and smirks, and looks back at me and says "Maybe one day, kid". I just smile and turn and walk around to the other side of the station... where I get into my Chevelle.

The look on their faces as I idled by, 468 w/ 4" collector dumps rumbling, cam loping hard, and smiled and waved, was something I may never forget....

:)

Classic story Trans Am... the look on the face is always priceless.

TransAm WS6 420,

That was hilarious! I hope they liked the taste of shoe leather! Never judge a book by it's cover!!

My wife and I don't fit into the "normal" age group at "Rod Runs" and "Cruise Ins" either. The age group is typically 50+ and we're both in our 30's. It's still fun though! Most car people, regardless of what type they're into, appreciate other "real" car people. A quick compliment on their car is a great way to open doors to good conversations. Keep an open mind and you might even learn something!

Unfortunately most people are living life in their own little bubble, totally oblivious to anything outside their little universe.

My Electra wasnt all that much to look at paint-wise, so I really didnt care much if people touched it. But one day I came out of a bar (where I was the DD by the way) to where my car was parked. I see about 4-5 college guys sitting on my hood! I asked them once to move ( I was with one buddy at the time, not a good fighting ratio), they didnt. I got in and sat there. They still didnt move. I started it up (and with headers and glasspacks it turned some heads at 2am). They still didnt budge. Of course, you can see this one coming by now. Sure enough I put it in reverse and left their rears on the ground. lol!
I learned real young to leave other peoples stuff alone. I always watch my buttons, zippers, snaps, whatever around anyone elses car.

Chris-

I think you are thinking of someone else - I had just finished taking the slicks off my GN and was talking to someone and was near your car, don't remember my hands near it unless I was showing someone what un-cracked paint looks like :).

I sat the rest of the afternoon with you guys in front of Jack's trailer.
