This hasn't been a very good week. Got home from work yesterday and wife met me at the door. I could tell something was wrong. There was. She told me that my GN was crushed by the weight of 7 inches of SLEET and snow we just received that night. I had it parked in the yard in one of those portable car garages, covered and sleeping for the winter. The weight of all that snow/sleet caved in, and the metal support poles, with all that HEAVY weight landed on the GN. The roof, and hood took the brunt of it. The roof is toast, but the hood is fixable/replaceable. My question involves insurance. I kept fire/theft for the winter as I don't drive it. I don't think that covers this, but i'm thinking my homeowners insurance will. I'm calling insurance Co. Monday. Has anyone had a simular experience or no of someone who has? Any advise is greatly appreciated. TIA

Damn, that is horrible! I have USAA insurance and when my engine was out and the car was "sleeping" for 2 years under my carport, I asked a bunch of questions. They told me if I dropped the insurance on the car my homeowners ins would not cover the car at all, even if the house burned down and got the car. I would assume that if you had fire/theft ins it would be part of the comprehensive package which should cover you. Best wishes.

I guess what makes it hurt even more is the car has only been in there a few weeks. I had it in the garage, but my brother was moving and asked if he could put all his "extra" stuff in the garage for about a month. I figured why not as we really didn't have a bad winter, and it has been MILD, until this week. My luck. That's what ya get for being nice I guess.............KTB

man sorry to hear about that crazy incident on your car,you might want to talk to a lawyer before telling anything to anyone....it may needed to be worded differfent to be covered or something..just bring both policies to a good lawyer and see what they say.....
that really sucks that happened to your ride, try not to be mad at your brother over it...good luck on the car,im sure people here would be glad to help anyway we can...

wow, that sucks man. good luck with the insurance company. in my experience all they ever do is deal misery.

>>> Hi,

Sorry to hear what happened.

If you kept comprehensive insurance on it you should be covered as the comprehensive portion of your policy covers damage to a vehicle caused by an event other than a collision or overturn. Examples include fire, theft, vandalism, and falling objects.

I think you should be fine as long as you have comprehensive on your policy.

Best of luck, hope it turns out well for you.

my brother was moving and asked if he could put all his "extra" stuff in the garage for about a month

That sleet came down heavy for a good 12 hours here. I've got about 2 1/2 feet of the stuff on my deck right now because of the drifting. The deck is about 10 feet off the ground and I'm beginning to worry about the weight. I shoveled enough of it off to get from my door to the grill (I like to grill all year 'round) and just that little bit must've weighed 500 lbs (at least that's what the back-o-meter is telling me). I can't imagine a port-o-garage withstanding much of it at all.

At the risk of pointing out the obvious...your brother's crap should've gone in the portable garage. As Buicksx2 said, if you had comprehensive (implied by the 'fire/theft' statement) you should be okay.

Good luck.

Jim

Sorry to hear that.....what came to my mind when reading this ,Got a Match, then torch it....but wow thats gota suck real bad...:frown:

I won't get into why he couldn't put his stuff in there, but I did call the insurance company today and put in a claim. They are going to come out and look at it. It didn't sound like there would be a problem talking to the claims adjuster, but who knows. I'll find out more when they come out and hit me with some numbers. After hearing some of the horror stories on hear about getting fair market values and such, I am not holding my breath. Thanks to those who replyed, and i'll keep you all updated as things happen.

One of the problems you might run into is it clearly states on these portable garages that they are not designed to hold the weight of snow. I guess it depends how much of a prick the adjuster is when he comes to look.

What brand did you have? Cheapo one? How did it break? was it the fabric that gave way or did the poles let go?

I bought one(ShelterLogic) this year and the Ttype is on the car trailer inside it. Mine got weighed down pretty bad this last storm. You don't know how much that stuff weighs until you have to try and get it off:eek: I thought when I put it up that it should be able to handle most snow falls but after the last two wet snow storms I think I'm going to modify it by adding more poles.

Good luck with the insurance.
