Chip set to 92. would like a little buffer. What kind of snake oil can I use? 93 is not available around. 100 is available but damn near $19 a gal.

Just reduce your boost and watch your Knock gauge or scanmaster KR when you get on it.
Or add an Alky Kit,,,:D Octane boosters dont do much if anything.

Do you use fuel that contains at least 10% ethanol or straight gas?

If you can get straight gas and E85 separately you can mix them and come up with a higher octane rating.

I have done it in a pinch when I ran out of alky and was able to maintain 26# of boost [no knock] by running non ethanol 93 and adding about 10/15% E85.

I was probably running at least 96 octane with that mix being that E85 is rated at 105 octane.

Disclaimer: this worked for me and if you try it, keep an eye on knock until you know for sure you will have none, my eyes were glued to the the W/B and S/M for first few hard pulls through the gears.

Years ago i lived in Mich 91 and 92 oct that was it . When visiting Va only 93 available . I couldn't tell the difference boost or performance.

What timing and boost level were you running, that makes the difference.

I have 91 swill here, as mentioned, just lower timing at wot and you'll be fine. Lower timing while keeping the boost up there is what my car likes. Yours may be different.

This is true, mine is different. My motor likes both timing and boost to go like hell.

What do you consider "to go like hell?" I don't see any times or dyno numbers in your sig. How much timing do you run with your setup?

I went 10.49 at 127.5 with 23/21 chip [in sig] but I don't remember exactly where I had the timing set that day.

I had been playing with it prior to going to the track and if I remember correctly I had 2/3 additional degrees through 1/2 and 0/1 through 3/4.

I only got that pass off and they tossed me out so I haven't been able to tune for the track or keep records.

Oh, and that was with a TE63 that was on my car at the time, it recently took a dump and I now have the one in my sig on there.

Alky would be easier and cheaper in the long run. But if you don't mind mixing fuels and all the inconsistencies that comes with it you could always go to Nitta's Auto Repair and buy some pure Ethanol for $10 a gallon. The Ethanol he sells is imported from Brazil and is 120 octane. Use the octane calculator at the bottom of this page http://www.intercepteft.com/calc.html to figure out the octane you want based on the Ethanol to fuel ratio. Mixing fuels gets old fast especially if you drive your car often and not ideal due to batch inconsistencies. Be careful and watch closely for knock. Not sure what injectors you're currently running but you may need to go bigger to prevent from getting too lean.

You could also go old school and mix Toulene or Xylene in your fuel to raise octane http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/misc/octanebooster.html

There were also some threads in here talking about Torco octane booster which may be the only off the shelf octane booster that actually works according to some well known and respected members here.

Got some ethanol from Nittas. He gave me a 20 min presentation about ethanol. Had a bunch of rubber (fuel system) parts in a jar of ethanol for 3 years. Shook it up and all the part seem to be in good condition. Looked at the recipe site. See the octane booster recipe that asks for mineral spirits and trans fluid. But this was for Toluene. Anything like this needed for Ethanol?

If I were you I'd save up for an ALKY kit from Julio so you only use the methonal when you need it.

Methanol is cheaper than what you spent on that ethanol and spraying it only when you need versus mixing it and burning it whenever the car is running will save you money over the long run as said by 626GN.

As a reference point I use about a 30% mix. This yields 97-98 octane with our poor quality gas. This allows me to run 25lbs of boost with no knock and good 02's at the top of 3rd gear. Your results may vary though depending on your combo. I have noticed on my car if I go way over 30% I get a hard start and rough idle when cold. It clears up and runs fine when it warms up though. Keeping it around 30% works for me.

What injectors are you running?

I agree with robzombie though, get the Alky if you can. If I were to run my car more often than I do I would go Alky.

My set up is kind of a mystery. The original owner passed away. Trying to figure out who he was and do a search on this site. The injectors are 36lb. At least that's what is said on the chip box for the set up. Just got the car, fresh off the boat and need to go through the car and do some investigating. One thing that is strange..... the car has a stock fuel pressure regulator. From a quick glance it has some good parts. TH 3" dp, Mease intercooler, Hotchkis suspension etc..... Just trying to say....strange at first glance I see a few grand in performance parts but a "stock fp regulator"?

If it truly does have only 36's then you may quickly run out of injector when you start adding Ethanol. Like anything else, go easy with the Ethanol at first and watch the 02's and knock.

Could the fuel pressure regulator be a 237 instead of a 233?
