I got my enlistment papers yesterday finally, and ill be there in 11 days for basic training and ait. Ill be there for 18 weeks and will be able to leave base after the first couple week of ait. Anything cool to do around town? Never been to MO and hope to see the cool stuff in it. Any words of advise would be much appreciated! Thanks alot in advance

Not to burst your bubble man but they dont call it Fort lostinthewoods for nothing. There is NOTHING around there. How ever if you want to drive a little ways there are things to do everywhere in MO. Worlds of fun in kansas city isnt too too far. Welcome to the military brother you are in for one hell of a ride. Keep your butt down and your spirits up. If you have any questions man give me a hollar. Harry.

I live in the big city near FT LW. Rolla has a population of about 16,000, largest town in the area. If you like outdoors stuff then this area is great. If you like the city..... then you ar poop out of luck. I have lived here for 8 years now, and love it. There is a GN owner on post down there. I believe he only post on t 6 p.com. Not sure of his screen name.

Did you enlist for 31B, (MP)? That's what I used to do, until I re-classed. I was there in Ft. Leonardwood in around 2000 for some training, not too much there to do that interested me. For the most part Military towns suck, unless your overseas, then it's a different kind of fun. When you go through MEPS, ask for an Airborne physical, then you can come to Ft. Bragg and we can work on our T-Types together.... :D

Thanks for the replies! My mos is 88m, motor transportation opps(drive the convoys when I get deployed). I tried to get an airborn option but it wasnt available with that mos at this time. Sounds like Im gonna like this place considering I wanna get out of the city. There is one good thing out of all this, with my sign on bonus I can finally buy my Buick!!

I have a friend up there that is an 88M. name is chris winters. if you get in a bind look him up man hes a cool dude. Oh and convoys are not that bad you just need to keep your wits about you when the poop hits the fan....and it will. If you get some time and you want to hang out i live in Arkansas so i am not that far away.

Well I'll add this...

Be glad (kind of) that you are not going in winter. Those hills are cold...real cold.

Stay away from groundhogs, they look cute but they can also be awful mean.

Find long steep hills around your home...preferably around 45* and a mile or better long...then,run up and down those hills until you pass out.....then,put an 80# backpack on and march up and down them at a pace of around 225 steps per minute. If you can do all this without falling over dead,it will be a breeze.

Stay in your perimeter area when on bivouac, its easy to get lost in 100 square miles of woods. We had a guy do guard duty in -8 temps get lost and he suffered severe frostbite before he was found.

Also Lostinthewoods is an engineer base, you will get to hear loud booms, alot.

Also while on the ranges if you hear planes flying above and farting sounds,it ain't your battle buddy,it's just the A-10 warthogs doing target practice.

Also one last point, and serious at that...

If you find any ordinace (explosives,I.E. mortar shells ,etc.) DO NOT TOUCH IT! Get your DI and have him look at it.

When I was there we had two boneheads on FTX right next to us find and start tossing a live mortar round, thinking it was some type of training dummy.Still had the firing pin in it and everything. That stuff is around out there,so be careful.

Nah wait, one more for good measure...when you come running out of the gas chamber, with tears and snot and all that mess running out of your face...hook a hard right,or even left but whatever you do don't go straight. There is a tree that will knock you on your ass if you do.

Try to get an overseas assignment, Germany is considered the best. I'm partial to Korea though (I'm a Korean linguist)which makes it alot easier to intermingle with the indigenous. You should see the looks I get when I start ratting off in their native tongue, me being a whiteboy and all. If you want a stateside assignment, I'd say Ft Lewis, WA. I loved the Pacific northwest, alot to do there and no shortage of women. Besides that I'd say Hawaii is also a good option. Anyway those are all places I've either been stationed or traveled through, all of them were really fun with good memories...

Fort richardson Alaska if it is still open. Anchorage is the best place i have ever been and the country is beautiful.

I was thinking Ft. Campbell,Ky so i can be close to home.Another on was Ft. Jackson,SC. Pretty much anything in the southeast would be nice. But Im not sure.
