I picked up a short tail TH400 from a pontiac today, plan on freshening it for my TTA.

What I know so far from searching is that I'll need to get a driveshaft made? I'll have to get a crossmember to relocate the torque arm also. The lines Im sure are probably different too.

My questions reside around torque converter choice and if I'll be able to retain my stock shifter/and or shifter cable (I will not remove the stock shifter from the car)

Anyone have any advice or helpful hints?

I am thinking about putting a bigger camshaft in the car, so obviously I'll have to do that before choosing a converter.

TIA

Ryan

to use the stock shifter you will need the detent bracker that Yullose is selling

I can't seem to find where I saw the cross member I needed, anyone have a quick link to it?

$395 ouch...I thought there was one for the stock torque arm, I may have to get the welder out on that note...

Before you dig too deep a hole here, take a look at the TTA FAQ List and see what the faster people are running for a transmission....I think your stocker will do very well into the 10's....With some special parts of course. :)

if you're going to be making enough power to need a TH400 I would suggest getting that torque arm. You're going to need it to dial in your pinion angle to get a good 60' and I doubt the stock one will hold that much power.

the price of the turbo 400 and rebuild for it are going to total $325....and yes it's a reputable guy redoing it...I am less worried about going fast as I am not having something done a second time and paying $1000+ to rebuild the 200r4

as for the stock torque arm...my car is in the 11 second range, stock should be fine...I'm saving nearly $700 right off the top

a boxed stock one works fine.....9.60's @ 142  :p

Your stock TTA crossmember. It will work. Why would you go to a 400? You will loose 4th gear and wont have the low first gear that the 200R-4 has. If your 200R-4 is done right you will be fine.

Like Steve said, stock TTA crossmember will work, the TTA has the torque arm mounted to the crossmember because, like the TH400, the 2004R does not have provisions for a torque arm mount like the 700R4 and T-5 do. The lines should hook right up. The driveshaft is tricky, you may be able to change just the yoke and get away with it - I've had a few friends able to get away with that. I wasnt able to and had a 3" moly shaft made up after breaking a redone stocker and a 3" alum shaft. I cant tell you how to make the shifter work scince I went with a Quick Silver but one thing you'll have to address is the speed sensor. As far as I know there is no speed sensor for a TH400 that will work, but jags that run sells speed sensors that will hook up to where the speedo cable would go and all you have to do is wire up a plug on the end of the sensor. Been using that setup for the last few years with no problem. You'll need a 4 pulse sine wave speed sensor and it runs about $79 www.jagsthatrun.com You'll also need to hook up the kickdown switch and figure something out with the modulator, I went with a full manual valve body w/brake so I'm of no help there. For a converter I have a PI Vigilante in the car and it works well except for going through a sprag every 200-300 passes(about once a year for me). I have heard alot of good about ATI and hope to try one of them in the future. Just remember converter slip is very important and you dont want one that will slip more than 10%. With a TH400 you wont have the option of locking the converter or shifting into 4th like alot of guys on this board have to do because of a slipping converter.

Other than that good luck, I've been running a TH400 scince 2002 and love it. I went through it a few months ago while I was having the converter restalled and after 4 seasons, 600+ passes, and about 30K miles it the clutches and everything else looked like new.

Steve

thanks for the detailed description of your account, and thanks to everyone else as well for their input.

I'm not going to be driving the car out of state or anything like that anytime soon, 99.9% of any highway time it sees is 17 miles up the highway to my girlfriend's house once every week or two and I've driven numerous mustangs I've owned through the years around with 4.30 gears and no overdrive so I think it's safe to say with 3.27's it will be much better than that. For what I plan to do it is ludacris to spend the type of money it will take to build a reliable 200, I could nearly convert it to a T56 for what some of you guys spend on a 200. For those who drive their cars everywhere it would only make sense to stick with overdrive...after the transmission I plan to put a 9 inch in the car at which time it should become pretty darn dependable at the track. I'll have the stock components put away for a later time if they should be needed. I just don't see risking possibly having to pull the transmission out again next year for something.

I have a spohn adjustable torque arm I am selling from my car. I also have drag bags......They are still on the car though ....
Lemme know.
