I don't get the purist comments on the other board. What percentage of people here actually own "stock" vehicles anyway? And what percentage of SS monte carlos get exterior mods that aren't basic bolt ons? Also I don't know about you guys but I am more than friendly to any other g body owners I run into. I don't put my car on a pedestal, in fact I've considered selling it because I have no time for it anymore. I guess it's just typical chevy guy vs everyone else BS.

Well those are just comments of fustration.
The SS Monte was engineered to have the ENTIRE powerplant/drivetrain swapped for increased performance.I mean come on, what serious car has a smogged 305 and a 7.5 rear?

So the GN guys are considered purists if we only need to swap Chip, injectors, turbo and Fuel pump.

The more I stare at the side profile the more it grows on me. It matches the GN squareness better than the monte IMO. Besides, our cars are actually fast enough to need the aerodynamics. LOL

Just like folks who think its BOP vs everyone else frustration, which I notice alot. I understand being a BOP fan can get frustrating, seeing alot of Chevy motors swapped into BOP's (being serious here). I got into a car that just happens to be a Chevrolet, doesn't mean I think Chevy is the end all be all. Montes come in many different colors and many aren't stock colors anymore . Glad to hear you are friendly, most GN owners I've met in person are but there have been quite a few who are somewhat stuck up.

One word, brother. Jealiousy.

And thats why there's the misconception comes from of GN owners who are stuck up. I can assure you that most Monte owners, are not jealous. If I wanted a TR I would of gotten one, same with many others...I someday would like one along with a few other cars when room allows. Some of us do own them by choice .

So the car can't be serious if its been modified? Cars are only as fast or cool as they are when stock? A bone stock GN isn't really that fast by today's standards either. I guess that takes out ALOT of cars that are pretty fast. Doesn't matter how the car starts....you can make anything fast, and g-bodies are relatively easy/cheap to do. You can only make things look so good though . And I'm aware thats purely opinion on what looks good. I think all 2 door g-bodies look good to some extent.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised at the reaction to the idea of this swap on the board. I'm glad the 4th gen Monte community seems pretty open to new ideas, engine swaps of various flavors, styles, etc. You see several Montes at a car show and they rarely will be the same or close. I personally think the Aero glass fits a Regal/GN body well with the sharper lines than a MCSS. I say go for it, I'm not a NASCAR/Aero fan neccessarily but if done right would respect it for being different.

I've seen at least 5 86 Aerocoupes down here. Every one of them trashed out.

Sure they aren't 87's? No 86's that I've seen up here, since they were only sold in the southeast not many have gotten up here it seems. But theres a registry at montecarloss.com and only a couple on there are in rough shape, I'd say most are kept as the owners generally know how rare they are.

I actually think it is sort of cool, but I don't think I would cut up a GN to do it... maybe a GN clone would be a better deal...
but, I admire any good workmanship, even if it is something I would never do!

Easier, cheaper more fun w/ a GN --Chip, injectors, turbo, fuel pump. and you can beat 99% of the cars on the road. block, crank, rods, heads, intake, headers, all can stay factory.

Performance wise it was par for the course in the 80's, lets not kid ourselves. In 83' the MCSS had the most hp of any GM...sadly. Doesn't say much and they are slow stock sure, no one really disputes that(?)...I don't think many buy them for the raw, stock power .

Cooler is opinion...easier, I won't disagree. Lots of people also like making a car a hell of alot faster than it is stock and having a sleeper. To me a sleeper is cooler than buying a truly fast factory car. Anyone can do that. Thats why I will probably never buy a newer Vette, as nice as they are.

No, I wouldn't have to say that...IMO, the MCSS looks better, thats why I bought it. I didn't buy it and convince myself otherwise. So I can make it as fast as I want but can't change the look of a car. I do think TR's look great though as I'm a big g-body fan, as you may notice I joined this site 3 years before you . Theres other choices that factor in too, such as the V-8 sound that can't be replaced, at least for me. I think some owners fail to realize if someone wanted to own one, they would. Its not a 50k car. Not everyone is jealous/envious/whatever some want to believe. Also other factors that makes these cars closer to equal, such as handling/braking, if that is of interest to the owner vs just going in a straight line.

Easier, for sure. Cheaper? Maybe. You can get a stock plain jane g-body or a clean MCSS for probably a few grand or so less than a GN in the same shape (obviously a plain jane g-body much cheaper). Take that money and you can have a car as fast or faster, depending on your build or how thrifty you are. Horse apeice, IMO.

DO IT!!!!!!!!!Let me suggest however,Slam it and dig up a set of tose old Centerline "BILLET G.N." wheels(Atleast 17's they might still be available) and powder coat 'em black.Add those little "aero"stickers on the lips. That car would be bitchin',but not at stock ride hight.

Dude I've worked at Chevrolet dealerships for the past 30 years. I could tell a cars year blindfolded while in a coma. I was around when the first batch of MCSSes showed up on the showroom in Feb/March 83. I used to own one of the first black 85 MCSS's to hit the street. VIN sequence 100048. The 86 Aero was only sold in the Jacksonville zone. This is FL. Land of the idiot. People drive Z/06s for DDs down here. I've seen plenty of trashed out rarities down here so being a mullet in a rusty Aero is almost as common as say someone driving a Lambo or Bentley with door dings and curb rash on the alloys. Someday plan a vacation down here during the Spring Meet or Turkey Rod Run at Daytona Speedway and you'll see these dandys in all their former glory. Don't feel insulted because your favorite marque isn't worshipped like an idol as you would like to believe. I sure don't when I see some trashed out TR.

Huh? Don't think I feel insulted....should I? I'm confused. I see plenty of MCSS's beat to crap and it doesn't really affect me, same with any car I like in crap shape. I don't idolize a car, or anyone for that matter. Its a peice of metal and rubber. Anyway, its pretty common for folks to call 86's 87's and vice versa. Didn't mean to insult your 30 years of experience .

And 86' Aeros were sold in other cities besides Jacksonville. The first 20 and last 40 went to Jacksonville, the others spread out between Atlanta, Charolotte and Birmingham.

IMO, if you took the time to restore the car, then don't ruin a collectors piece. these cars are getting rarer by the day. I say don't do it. but its your car and your call.

It's not ruining the car. It can be completely reversed just like all the cars that have cages and no a/c in them now. The fact that people don't like "change"...as in not "mainstream" of what people expect is where all the complaints come from. I see A LOT of these cars parted out in the for sale section and on e-bay. I'll bet most of those cars could have been saved if the owner knew how to do the work to restore the car. That, IMO, is ruining a car! Not a rant on my part...just an observation on what I see going on.

Actually, I just picked up an "all chrome" silver 87 T....I may convert it instead of the GN.
