is it necessary to put a pipe inside the converter after you gut it? or can i just tear out the insides and put it back on? or would it be better to just get a test pipe with a dump? how much gain could i expect with a dump? from the y-pipe after the cat to the stock loctation flowmaster the car retains the stock pipe.

pipe in the converter isnt necessary. just gut it and put it back on. i run a test pipe with dump but any cop can easily see i am running illegal due to lack of catalytic converter. i would put a dump in front of the hollowed out converter. the dump on my car sits far enough forward so that if i wanted to put a hollowed out catalytic converter on it again i could do so w/ having to mess with the dump. gains from dump is hard to say. some with 3 inch DPs, no cat, and free flow exhaust sometimes see no gain. others with stock DPs, cat and exhaust will obviously see more gain from a dump. i couldnt begin to guess what you would gain going to an open dump on your combo other than deafness;) LOL j/k open dump sounds cool especially when you let off it and you can hear the turbo de-spooling:D

i gutted mine out a year ago and have been running a hollow cat ever since with no problems at all...

IMO, buy a test pipe, and leave your cat alone. A test pipe is $50, and constitutes less pressure drop than a gutted cat...

Of course, my opinion applies to testing only...

Of course, of course, my opinion does not require that you trash your cat, so if it is good, you can reinstall it for those family weekends at Walden Pond...

BTW, gutting a cat is hazardous to your lungs. Can you say gas mask???

:)

I ran a gutted cat ever since I have had the car. It worked for a while. I now have a dump w/ electric cutout, and a cat for inspection purposes. The car sounds really nice w/ the dump open, in fact with the cutout you can play wind unsuspecting V8 minds  And with a cold air kit you can reeeally hear de-spool. Have fun with it.

tips?

Anyone have specific tips/instructions for gutting a cat? I have a stock cat I will keep for emission testing, a test pipe for the track, but figure I should gut out my second cat and use it for daily driving - rather than taking a chance with leaving the testpipe on for daily driving. Does anyone know what happens if you get pulled over with illegal no cat system and they notice? Maybe just get a fix it ticket? Thanks Much.
Gary

probably just a fix it ticket. maybe a small fine. just say you bought it like that. also to gut the cat just take a metal rod or broom stick and a hammer and put the cat in a vice and chisel that crap outta there. it all comes out clean and in chunks.

I took the cat and cut the pipe off the front and back. Then took the junk out of the middle. Then went to the local muffler shop and got a piece of 3 inch pipe and ran it thru the gutted cat and had the flange welded back on and the cat welded to the pipe. Looks authentic and no drone noise.:D
Tarey D.
