Ok, ive been hunting the source of this 'knock' for a year now. about a year ago, this 'ticking' gradually grew into a full blown knock. its not LOUD, but its definitely noticable. after about 3 months of the knock, it was oil change time. went to the longer filter, with more oil, and the knock became louder yet. changed back to the shorter filter, with the stock number of quarts and the noice became a touch quieter. well, torwards the end of last years cruising season, the knock was soo loud, (to me anyways) that i quit the season a month earlier and parked her. i did all the stethescope trials, messed with the converter bolts, checked to see if its just normal valvetrain noise seeping out a minor exhaust leak, checked the valve train, sensors, alt. bearings the whole nine yards, and decided (no, i didnt pull the pan yet, will do that next) that it was mains, and left it at that. i got my mind prepared to not be able to drive my prized posession this season, and let it go at that. well, i fired it up today, for the first time since the winter (it was apart, gettin some intercooler, header, and turbo maintenance done to it) to get her fluids cycled, and the knock is markedly quieter now. i can still hear it, but its quieter than at the beginning of last fall. how. what in the HECK is this car doing? i know that i gotta pull the pan, and at least inspect the caps, and bearings, and do an oil analysis in the minimum but, before i do that, are there any more theories out there, that i can investigate for now?

check the FLYWHEEL BOLTS

ask me how I know !
not the converter bolts the flywheel bolts,
loosen the converter, slide it back , open end wrench to check em ALL,
I chased it for quite a while, was gonna pull the motor, and forund them loose ,
Good Luck

by converter bolts, i meant flywheel bolts. theyre different??? and if ANY of those were loose, would the sound get QUIETER as time went on?

mine varied

would be worse at times,
you have 3 conveter bolts, and 5 flywheel bolts,
check all of them,

Any chance a couple of metal parts were rubbing together and finally 'clearanced' each other? I had the front rocker rubbin/hitting the valvecover inside 'plate' that is by the breather (turbo side).

Noise went away after it clearanced itself. Never saw shavings....but also never cut open the filter.

....just pointing out an example or symptom they may help. Goodluck.

How loud was the knocking? Could it have been maybe a worn cam lobe, and you heard a loose pushrod bouncing around? I'd pull the valve covers, too. It might not be it, but it's easier than dropping the pan.

I had a problem like that once. It was the stock timming chain. The damn teeth were coming off and the car still ran. lol That was weird.

and this noise reverberated all the way down to the oil pan? i know noise can move around alot thru components.
