If the engine is running well I WOULD NOT pull the heads off as that only adds around 40hp with ported iron heads/intake.
I have a friend with 100K mile stock unopened factory built longblock with only $40 valvespring upgrade (stock springs get tired). Then he added a TE-64 turbo, 50lb MSD injectors, 3" TH downpipe, and PTE FMIC with LS1MAF+ Translator. Built turbo with 9/11 convertor and stock rear end with G80 posi and Nitto DR's 275/50/15 mainly.
TTop GN weighs 3850lbs with driver and has gone mid 11's@121.5MPH on slicks and tons of high 11's on Nittos. IF the car weighed about 300lbs less it would be in the 10's.
I would suggest mods similar to above and not take the engine apart. ONce you learn to tune and max out this combo then maybe think about heads/cam (expensive upgrades and labor intensive).
Same guy on conservative 21* timing, 100 octane/2 gallons 116, 29psi boost, made 526rwhp/658rwtq locking up the torque convertor. He has been pushing this car hard for 3-4 years with no problems yet.
I would do injectors/turbo/intercooler/downpipe and LS1 MAF + Translator. Then have Jay Jackson (YgetV8) modify your stock TB (57mm) and open it up to 62/65mm for $80.
Good luck,
