Im installing HeadGaskets this weekend.

Is there a post or archive with this install info??

Any suggestion or pitfalls to avoid?

I just picked up stock GM turbo HG ($48 each!!), Intake Gasket, and ARP head bolts.

Do I need add anything to the gaskets (HG & Intake) for sealing?

Torque specs for ARP head bolts??

Anyone done this - add comments.....I'm sure someone has.

Brandon,

Pick Up some Permatex Form-A-Gasket #2 from the parts store, and get some extra 10W-30 Oil you have laying around.

Put the #2 on the threads of the bolt, and a little bit on the bottom of the shaft. After that dip the head of the bolt into a little bit of oil, and thread them into the block. (DON'T FORGET THE WASHERS ON THE BOLTS)

Here is a helpful link:

For the Intake and Heads it is important that you follow the proper sequence, and they can be found here:

Hope this helps!

One you have the heads off, Tap all the bolt holes in the block and heads. This makes sure you get good clean positive engagement of the bolts and no stripped theads. I personally use a teflon thread sealant on the head bolt threads as they protrude into the water jacket. Some 10w-30 on the heads of the bolts. Torque by the procedure on gnttype.org. I would also check the heads for flatness and clean all surfaces with a quick dry no film cleaner. Be sure to remove any of the old gasket material. It is tough but not impossible.

Quick question scince we're on the subject - do the ARP studs require the same torque as the bolts or do they require more or less?

Thanks,
Steve

Head Gasket question

What are your opinions on copper head gaskets? I have a set on my car that i bought and I was wondering if you would reccomend changing to non copper...I was also wondering if there is a pushrod problem once you have copper head gaskets, (ie. them being too short) cause i have to change my lifters and Iw as wondering if I should change my rods while I'm at it. Thanks, Bobby

If you are changing stock head gaskets because you blew them, you might want to consider dropping the oil pan off.

I have lost many gaskets and I can tell you that the stock composite gasket sends small pieces into your oil pan. These pieces collect around the oil pickup tube and restrict oil flow into the pump.

I would take the oil pan off, spray the valley clean with brake clean, clean out oil pan and reinstall. While you have the intake off pour in your oil and prime the oil pump with a drill motor. Place a small hose over the turbo oil feed and route it into the drain tube.
