 Just got back from being towed...

I was at a light, and I took off and next thing I know, my tranny was making all these crazy noises, and I heard all these weird crackiling noises and I no longer had any gears! I costed into a parking lot, and noticed all the rear-end oil spewing out the rear cover   So, I guess I blew out my stock, untouched 22 yr old rear-end? Is that what happens when a rear blows out ? (i.e. tranny has no gears)?? Did I also mess up my tranny? I remember a while back that I checked all the U-joints and saw no problems..I guess internally the rear just blew out and now the drive shaft is just spinning around at the rear??

So what are my options to repair this (i.e. just find another stock rear end (drum to drum) and install it? I hope I didnt screw up my tranny!!

probably better off getting a used one. if there is fluid out then you either cracked the housing or hopefully put a hole in the cover. that is wierd a stocker is good for 10's

Hmm, I just remembered that I have a brand new Eaton Posi (along with the oversized bearings needed for the install) sitting in my garage.

So, hopefully I just put a hole in the cover, and alls I would have to replace is the posi unit and the cover correct? Also, I guess I would need to get new pinion too right? My rear is a peg leg by the way..Anything else I would need to fix this? I havent checked yet since im at work, but I believe my driveshaft is still in place (i.e. didnt come lose) so thats a good sign..

Look into one of those aluminum covers by RJC or whoever that have the adj.bolts that sit on the carrier and keep the ring and pinion from deflecting under load.BTW,your PM box is full...

Thanks TurboV8R..I cleared some room in my PM box also..

I didnt open it up yet, but if i need new pinion and gear (which im sure I will), which vendor sells this and also a part #?

Well, Here is the carnage

Broken Rear GN 001.jpg

So, how did this ever happen?! I did notice some crackling noises for the last 1/2 year, and I never knew where it was coming from..When I lifted the car just now to open the cover is when I heard that exact crackling noise..

So, what are my options now to fix? I already got a new eaton posi unit, but who sells the rest of the broken mess?? Also, my driver side axle slid right out, but it looks like its in good shape (i.e. not stripped or anything)..Should I go with Moser axles? They must make stock replacement C-clip axles for our car right??

I must admit, I've seen a lot of various carnage over the years, but never this from a rear. Carrier busted in half along with a bent main cap, and other assorted broken pieces.

Sure did it right.

I would be tempted to find another rear. With the amount of damage the center section may have been tweaked.

Put a whole nuther rear under the car.

That one will never be "right" again.

Broken cap bolt, bent cap, etc... If that were my rear, it would go straight to the scrap pile... replaced by an unmolested assy.

I've only seen that once before and it was my old car. You got out lucky. Mine accually threw the carrier out the cover and hit the gas tank. Replace the rear and scrap that one for sure. Bad but good time for an upgrade.

Welcome to the king of the hill!!! I have busted up 7 different rears in my 62 Chevy, but none to this extent. I would say you were loosing teeth off the spider gears 1 or 2 at a time and somehow they got pushed into the spinning mass and KABOOM...

We all know the saying, 2 objects of matter cannot occupy the same space at the same time...henceforth we have interference. The busted carrier throws me though, then I thought about it. Over 15 years ago, I was taking a metallurgy class on heattreatment of steels. I brought in some carnage from one of my fun evenings out. We tested the steel and found that even in the 60's, GM was using junk steel. I was so full of impurities it had probably been a model T at one time before. Just imagine how bad it was by the 80's.

Do a 9 inch ford and be done.

thats pretty good grenading of the rear.. looks like the differential gear set (spiders) or differential pin let loose, then jumped into the ring gear and presto- shrapnel!

I would be sucpicous of the housing with that amount of damage. If it was just the differential gears you would be ok. However, the bearing cap and bolt- uggh..
"Honey I need some money for some rear... end parts and housing." :)

Damn never have I seen a carrier blow apart like that.

So are you guys saying his entire axle housing is tweaked?

Congratulations on a job well done:eek: :D Get a whole new rear end. I would get a bolt in 9" from strange or something.

As one with an old rear, and I'm sure the OP wants to know about this recommendation...about what is the:
- cost difference
- mods needed
- difficulty in making the change over work
Thanks

9 Inch

Currie Enterprises and a few others make a bolt in unit. It comes with all G-body mounting brackets and is able to be modded in length. A friend did one in a Monte 10 years ago and tweeked the length to fit some killer looking 15x10 Centerlines. A complete unit cost I would not know, but should be about $1500-2000 depending on your choices of components. Go with a Detroit locker, not a Traction-lock. Your inside tire will "chirp" when turning or if you have good traction it will "bang"(disengage to allow the turn) the gears, but a better locker there is not. You will NEVER blow that up. Even a mild build 9 is good for about 900-1000 ponies.

Thanks
Coach

Yeah, im really confused on how this happened! My car is all stock, and I havent been beating up on it at all (i.e. no constant powerbraking/big smokey burnouts)..I ignored some crackling noises which I coulnt figure out what it was..I bet the differential pin came out lose was the culprit, and finally it just grenaded!

a friend of mine lost the rear in his gn several years ago------damage wasn't quite as "severe" as this case but the ring gear was toasted to the point of "no go"-------he was just casually driving in town at 35 mph when it went out-------he bought a new carrier and ring/pinion and i attempted to install it------the housing was obviously tweeked and it was impossible to get the gear contact pattern to set up right-------nothing appeared to be bad but obviously something was distorted out of spec------i've done lots of them and have all the GM tools for proper setup so i know how to do it right--------i would probably be willing to bet a million bucks that this housing is even worse that the one i am describing-------and just about a year ago i had another friend chunk a few teeth off his ring gear at the track-------didn't harm his housing cause it set up just fine with new gears but it took out the rear sprag in the tranny............RC
