Well I picked up a 4.1L #291 cast number motor today, actually they are still pulling it so I wont get it until tomorrow but i paid for it today. I plan to just gradually build a motor for a spare or maybe for a future car. I dont want anything crazy but just something simple that will handle boost as if it were like a stock 109.

What are decent pistons that wont cost too much?

What machine work should i do?

What cam, stock one thats in it?

Head work? The motor has about 100K miles on it and ran when I looked at it. Oil was black but was full. Step me through this so I have an idea of what I may be getting myself into. -----Jeremy

i can't tell you everything, this is my first build.

i got the block cleaned and checked.
i bought ruggles book and the powersource.
using stock crank that has been worked over with die grinder
using stock rods that have been grinded on
plan on new trw hypers

haven't thought about the other stuff, but thinking
clevite v mains (supposed to be like the old english bearings)
stock rod bolts
arp head and main bolts

Check the deck surface on both banks around the head bolt holes. These blocks were bad about cracking into the water jacket or the cylinder around the bolt holes; especially the top row.

Good luck-

I've got one that is ready to go together using the the turbobuickS budget build as a guide. I've second guessed myself over and over on the hyper pistions. Spend the money once and buy a good pistion to give yourself piece of mind.

Another good source to contact is Nick Micale (Arizona GN); He's done quite a few 4.1 builds.

I love threads like this. Are they using rebuilt stock heads? Are there major advantages in using TAs? Just curious.
