So I fired my engine after a re-build for the first time. It fired and ran great at 2100 r.p.m. (to break in the new cam) for about 1 minute..............then it missed...........and missed again........then it massively backfired and quit. I can't start it again at all. Fuel pressure is good..........the exhaust stinks of gas. But it won't fire again. I checked all connections, all fluid levels........lots of battery juice. The ignition system seems to have just died. Any ideas????

P.S. It ran great for one minute........so it's obviously set up right. HELP!:frown:

check control module or coil pack

Pull the plugs and see it there is fuel on them.
Don't try to fire it until we figure out what is wrong.
You don't want to wash your rings down or hydrolic the motor.

Did your crank sensor get hit by the balancer?
Cam sensor move?

Here's a short cut that I took from Vortexbuicks that he got from Jim Testa long ago. (And, here is his entire write up)

No start - no spark, has injector pulse - Check the ignition module
No start - has spark, no injector pulse - Cam Sensor or ECM
No start - no spark or injector pulse - Crank sensor or module

I am not sure it always 100% correct, but, it may help you cut to the chase.

Ya...the engine turns over easily. I'll try looking into all the other stuff right away and get back. Just remembered when I installed the crank sensor it was a little sloppy....is it suppose to be like that?????

No no no, crank sensor has to be set perfectly and no slop or it will contact the balancer and its toast, look for marks on the inner edge of the balancer where it sits within the crank sensor for obvious sighns of contact, im suspecting you will find that the balancer has destroyed your crank sensor...HTH

The sensor itself wasn't sloppy...........just the metal insert inside the sensor. (the little metal piece.......a magnet of some sort???) I looked, and didn't see any damage or any scoring of any kind.

did you have any work done to your computer?

No work done on the computer.......but I did put in a new Eric Marshall chip and 65lb. Siemens injectors. I don't think it's the crank sensor because there there is definitely an injector pulse......... it backfired badly and reeked of unburnt fuel just after it quit...........coil module mabey??? Why would it just quit???

no gas leak coming from the down from the exhaust, nothing leaking anywhere?

Check all your connections, you could have easily pinched a injector harness wire when you tightened down the coil pack and ignition module.

Now is when you check all the fuses and see what popped:smile:

Hopefully its nothing major.

Check the crank sensor anyway. NEVER take anything for granted.

put a pressure gauge on the rail and see if its holding pressure

Was holding 43 psi at the rail............don't think it's fuel........otherwise it wouldn't have backfired so badly.......lots of unburnt fuel in the downpipe. I'll start with changing the coil module and checking the wiring. Thanks guys!!!

almost sounds like an original crank sensor .. maybe it took a dump .. is it a small black piece with 2 slots ??

I'd go with the Slingblade approach:

-Do it got gas?

-Are the grounds solid?

-Are the plugs gapped correctly and in the correct order

-Is the ECM connection solid

-Timed correctly

-etc,etc...

If everything was in working order when you took it out, it should be in working order when you put it back in. Somewhere, something minute probably directly related to the install was not put in quite right, I'd focus all my energy there before suspecting a bad part. Since it ran for a minute, then missed a few times and then backfired (and I suspect there is plenty of juice in the battery) I would start with the harness and move onto fuel next. Put a hose on that fuel rail and see if its spitting air.

This sounds very similar to what happened to me. It turns out that my cam sensor went bad or was worn out to the point of causing the same problems. I had a bad backfire, no start condition, smelled fuel, fouled plugs, etc. However, my car turned over very slowly indicated that the timing had been moved.
