Finally saved enought to get an exhaust to replace my ruted out tail pipes and muffler.

The shop I went to made a big deal about me ordering an exhaust off of the internet saying that it wouldn't fit and that "They had seen it many times before"

I think that they were just trying to sell me on their "Custom" work for just under 1000.00.

So,...any advice? Are any of products out there I need to worry about fitment issues?

I was going to order the ATR 2.5" stainless with stainless mufflers but decided it might be a good idea to run the choice by a few folks in here.

Thanx for the help

I had a guy put in a 3" single for me for $340 including the muffler. It is not mandrel but the bends are kept to a minimum. Huge improvement over stock. Slight increase in noise but much easier to break the rear tires.

contact summit, ask for the hooker exhaust system for the Buick Grand National. It comes complete from the cat back with hooker aerochamber mufflers that sound good but not obnoxious. The system is 279 plus shipping and is a bolt in item. There are 2 holes that need drilled in the frame behind the rear wheels. This system exits like stock and fits like a glove. A muffler shop should have it in in about a 1/2 hour or so. The last one took us 45 minutes including installing a new down pipe. It is bolt in and if you have any mechanical skills you can installl this system your self in the drive way. My first one I took to the mufffler shop and had them wack off the old one. Drove it home and did the exhaust install in my driveway took about 2 hours that way.

I purchased Cotton's single shot. Great out of the box fit. Very nice quality for $300.00ish...but.....It is LOUD in the car at highway speeds. So much so that it has taken some enjoyment from the car.

actually its $279 INCLUDING shipping:)

sorry about that, living only 20 minutes I never pay for shipping. Good to knwo thqt the shipping is free.

Thanx for all the input. Will look into the hooker exhaust from Summit. That's a heck of a lot cheaper than the 600 or so clams. I might also ask here today after work a local muffler shop what they would charge for a single 3" for a comparison.

I swear by the ATR 2.5" with Pitbull mufflers. It would also be a nice time to buy a THDP and a testpipe.

-DC:cool:

I've got the Hooker system with the Areo chamber mufflers on my GN, not too loud.

If me and my car were in Denver I'd get something stainless. :)

If not I would get the aluminized system.

This of course assumes you actually drive it a bit.

I've tried 3 or 4 different mufflers on my car looking for the right balance of sound, flow and no drone. Aerochambers are the best thing I've come across.

Ok, well those people are on crack so ignore them :-)

Ask yourself this: Why am I replacing my current systsem?
Answer = rusted out. What do you think will happen to the hooker system or every other steel system?

If you don't want rustout you need stainless.

The only drawback to the ATR system is the cost but just like everything in this life you do get what you pay for.

You want a cheap system? Pay a cheap price.

I have had the hooker system and it rusted away. I went with the ATR system for my GN.

Im all for this way of thinking but the Hooker system will last as long and most likely LONGER then the original system will last. You bad experience was prolly the OLD design Hooker which was not aluminized years ago. My Hooker is 4 years old and does NOT have ONE dot of rust anywhere.. Trust me you can't go wrong. (with a hooker)But if you want to spend twice as much go right ahead:)

No my hooker (that sounds so strange) was aluminized.

It was my daily driver up here in salt country so I am sure that didn't help either.

And don't forget the social aspect of being able to smile and say "why yes...that is stainless" :-)

I just don't want him thinking there is some reason other than $$ to avoid the ATR systems.

Dunno,..... the cheap way is looking better
Denver actually isn't too bad for salt on the roads. You'd think it would be but it isn't. Very few cars are running around that look like what you see back east with the huge cancer holes eating away the fenders etc.

Yea,....rust. My tail pipes are connected only by the hangers. =\

I'm almost of the frame of mind to get the stainless like what was pointed out earlier,.... but the extra money ,....I could use for a couple other really basic mods. (Car is 100% stock)

For the cost difference I could get another fuel pump and an adjustable regulator or even a scan tool.

I've had the Hooker exhaust on mine for nearly 4 year now. I'd try and get Summit or whoever you order it from to include the Hooker Maxflow mufflers instead of the Aerochambers. They are a straight through design, and flow better. Quiet too.
When I ordered mine, the kit came with the Supercomp mufflers. They drone a little, and don't flow as well as the Aerochambers, and not near as well as the Maxflows.

You can't go wrong with the Hooker exhaust no matter which muffler you get with it. Fitment is good, and it has lasted 4 years in the Southeast Texas humidity.

I wish I read this post a year ago, I have the flowmaster cat back system. It sounds OK but the performance is not too impressive. :(

Anybody ever use a single in/out dynomax turbo muffler in place of the cross-flow style muffer? One exaust tip may not look good as two, but it would add to the "sleeper" look and would outflow the cross-flow style.
