My car is make a weird grinding noise between the fly wheel and the torque converter only when it is in rev or drive. but in neuatral or park it doesnt make it. do you guys think it is the transmisssion or the torque con. It shifts fine, no great. took it to a friend and he said he put spacers and it quit making the noise but it started again ha sanybody experienced this or can anyone help me out please.

I would suggest taking it apart and visually checking it before you cause some real damage. It may only be some loose bolts on the tq conv. or flex plate or end play on your crankshaft due to wear of the thrust bearing.

First off, remove the inspection plate and check for loose bolts as mentioned above. Sometimes guys forget the converter bolts, or have used and reused bolts so many times and didn't use loctite so they come loose. If there is nothing wrong at the flexplate, pull the pan if all fluids are at correct levels, etc. Are you seeing any ohter issues? Did you get underneath while it was running? Did you pull and push everything to see if it is only a loose part vibrating?

noise

yes ive gotten under the car and checked every bolt is tight this noise only comes when in drive or rev and at 0 mph when the car starts to move the noise is gone?

Noise

Hi,
Flywheel? The hub may be cracked.Make sure your crank pilot bore is clean. Unfortunately, you will have to drop the trans to verify. It might be that you just have too much torque for the poor old thing. They sound like it's the end of the world when they're broke. Good luck!

Its a auto, whats the pilot bore got to do with it?

Check the convertor bolts, they are probably loose.

pilot bore

Hi,
In admittedly rare cases, the crank pilot bore could be rusty or galled, causing a problem with the way the torque converter seats onto the flywheel. This could cause the flywheel to be flexed outward, and they fatigue pretty quickly in these circumstances. Just a thought, not the most likely sceneario. By the way, I have noted a couple of guys recently have had thrust bearing failures after an overhaul, don't know if it's a cause, or an effect, but that would definitely strain the flywheel, among other things.

noise

well its not a very loud noise its something very minor but nevertheless it has to be addressed. guess ill have to drop the transmission.

Find a decent tranny shop for an "estimate". Stay with the car, let them put it on a lift, with you there, and see what a "trained tranny ear" says. Get a trained second opinion. But DO NOT LEAVE THE CAR!!! TRUST NO ONE WITH THE CAR!!! ;)
